The idea
I believe chocolate is shifting from candy to wellness superfood, while cocoa stays scarce, so value flows to whoever owns the bean, the premium brands that can charge more on a health story, and the functional-food shelf where cacao already sells at a premium. I built a basket spread across those layers: cocoa price exposure, the branded chocolate names with pricing power, the ingredient makers who stretch expensive cocoa, the protein and functional-food shelf, and the grocers carrying the rebrand, while underweighting mass-market candy that just eats rising costs.
What it owns
- Chocolate sold as protein, fuel and wellness product commands premium prices separate from the candy aisle. · BellRing BrandsIts chocolate protein shakes sell at a premium as functional nutrition rather than as candy., Simply Good FoodsIt frames chocolate bars and shakes as nutrition and wellness tonics rather than indulgences., Celsius HoldingsIts functional beverages prove that wellness framing lets brands charge superfood prices for drinks and cacao products., Laird SuperfoodIt sells cacao creamers and powders straight into the wellness-superfood category, betting pure on chocolate as tonic.25%
- When cocoa is scarce and expensive, companies that make substitutes, flavor science and processing workarounds capture margin. · Bunge GlobalIt makes cocoa butter equivalents that let chocolate makers stretch expensive beans further when supply tightens., International Flavors & FragrancesIts flavor science keeps chocolate tasting authentic when manufacturers use less cocoa per unit due to scarcity., IngredionIt makes replacer ingredients that reduce cocoa per bar, gaining volume when the bean is expensive and tight., Archer-Daniels-MidlandIt processes cocoa at scale, earning on the volume and complexity of moving an expensive and scarce crop.24%
- Natural and premium grocery chains collect margin on cacao-as-superfood products and the shoppers who buy them. · Sprouts Farmers MarketIts shoppers already pay premium prices for wellness-branded products including cacao goods., Costco WholesaleIt moves premium and functional chocolate at volume to members who pay for quality, mainstreaming the wellness rebrand., Natural Grocers by Vitamin CottageIts supplement-aisle positioning sells cacao directly as a health product to wellness-focused shoppers.19%
- Premium chocolate brands can raise prices and frame expensive cocoa as a quality signal rather than a cost burden. · Mondelez InternationalIts premium chocolate brands have pricing power to pass through cocoa costs and sell the health angle at higher margins., The Hershey CompanyIts ability to pass cocoa costs through to consumers and recover margins tests whether the pricing-power story holds.18%
- Direct exposure to cocoa futures and prices means upside if the bean stays tight and supply stays constrained. · Invesco DB Agriculture FundIt holds cocoa and agriculture futures directly, so upside comes from tight cocoa supply and sustained scarcity.6%
