Power Equipment Bottleneck

The idea
I believe electrical equipment, not chips, is the real bottleneck on AI data center buildout: transformers and switchgear have multi-year lead times, giving manufacturers backlog and pricing power. I only hold the box makers across transformers, switchgear, distribution gear, backup power, and rack power conversion, skipping contractors and materials since they dilute the thesis. No single name dominates, and I keep a cash sleeve to add if a sharp drawdown hits the price without touching the underlying backlog. I would rethink this if backlog conversion stalls rather than accelerates.
What it owns
- The makers of the exact boxes with years-long delivery queues that form the heart of the power equipment bottleneck. · Forgent Power SolutionsIt makes transformers and switchgear for data centers and has a substantial backlog that must convert to revenue at projected rates., Powell IndustriesIt builds switchgear and integrated electrical systems that data centers need, the exact constrained boxes at the bottleneck., SPX TechnologiesIt makes medium-power transformers with some of the longest lead times in the buildout, one of the most constrained components., American SuperconductorIt sells grid power systems that manage electrical loads, and the same equipment shortage pushes operators toward its technology., Pioneer Power SolutionsIt makes transformers and power equipment for data centers and mobility, a microcap with significant room for rerating if shortages persist.42%
- The enclosures, busbars, and distribution equipment that carry power from the transformer to the server hall. · nVent ElectricIt makes enclosures and busway for data center power distribution and recently acquired a switchgear maker to add scarce capacity., ESCO TechnologiesIt recently acquired a test equipment maker, so it rides the wave of constrained electrical equipment being built and commissioned., Flex LtdIt owns a direct maker of switchgear and power distribution units for AI data centers through its Anord Mardix subsidiary., Methode ElectronicsIt makes the busbars that carry power to racks, a smaller maker in the exact bottleneck segment.23%
- Data centers cannot open without generators and battery systems, so this gear shares the same order queue as transformers and switchgear. · Generac HoldingsIt makes the backup generators that sit behind every data center, and its commercial and industrial orders track the buildout., EnerSysIt makes battery systems for uninterruptible power supplies, the stored power every data center requires for reliability.14%
- The equipment that steps grid power down to what servers actually consume, sharing the same shortage dynamics closer to the chip. · Vicor CorporationIt makes power conversion modules that step power down at the rack, the final box in the data center power chain., Advanced Energy IndustriesIt sells power supplies that convert and deliver electricity inside data center racks, betting that power delivery is the constraint.11%
