The idea
I believe the West's robotics and defense buildout is bottlenecked by rare earth separation and magnet production, nearly all of which sits in China today, and a decade of reshoring will make the whole ex-China chain more valuable. This basket owns it end to end: mining and processing pure-plays at the core, magnet and motor makers around them, plus the defense and robotics demand that pulls it all forward. I keep it broad across layers rather than betting on single names, hold a small cash buffer, and think of this as a multi-year position, not a trade.
What it owns
- Rare earth miners and processors building supply outside China are the scarcest link in the chain needed to break Chinese control of magnets. · MP MaterialsIt runs the only US chain from mined rare earths to finished neodymium magnets, making it the core anchor for the bet that Western processing becomes the bottleneck., VanEck Rare Earth/Strategic Metals ETFIt holds a diversified basket of rare earth and strategic metals producers worldwide, catching the reshoring wave even if any single miner stumbles., Energy FuelsIt is building US separation capacity for heavy rare earths currently sourced almost entirely from China, targeting exactly the choke point in this take., USA Rare EarthIt is building a domestic magnet manufacturing plant, a direct bet on production capacity that barely exists in the West outside China., Ramaco ResourcesIt is attempting to extract rare earths from Wyoming coal deposits, an unconventional new US supply source that would add meaningful optionality to the domestic chain., NioCorp DevelopmentsIts Nebraska project would add US supply of critical minerals the robotics chain needs if the project advances toward financing and construction., Idaho Strategic ResourcesIt holds US rare earth claims alongside gold mining operations, offering cheap optionality on domestic deposits that become valuable as reshoring capital flows in.32%
- Makers of motors and precision magnetic parts sit directly above the supply bottleneck, converting magnets into the products that end markets need. · Carpenter TechnologyIt supplies specialty magnetic alloys into motors and defense programs, capturing demand from the reshored magnet supply chain regardless of which miner wins., AMETEKIt makes precision motors and instruments for Western factories without the boom-bust risk of smaller pure plays, providing large-cap ballast to the motors layer., Regal RexnordIt builds the electric motors that convert magnets into moving machines, the critical layer transforming the supply bottleneck into finished products., MaterionIt supplies advanced materials into the same motors, defense, and electronics programs that consume the magnets, riding the reshoring buildout in parallel., AllientIt makes precision motors for robotics programs as a small pure play, providing concentrated exposure to the motion-control segment driving magnet adoption.24%
- Robot builders and automation companies drive the decade-long growth in magnet demand that anchors this take's entire demand case. · Global X Robotics & AI ETFIt tracks robotics and AI companies as a basket, capturing the robotics growth driving magnet demand without depending on one robot maker., TeslaIts humanoid robot development could drive significant growth in magnet consumption if production volumes reach meaningful scale., TeradyneIt owns Universal Robots, a leading collaborative robot maker, putting it directly in the path of cobot adoption driving magnet consumption., Rockwell AutomationIt is large-cap ballast on the demand side, with factory automation orders serving as a direct indicator of how fast the West is building the robot-filled plants this take requires.22%
- Defense contractors and military programs are the primary buyers motivated to fund domestic rare earth capacity as a national security priority. · Leonardo DRSIt makes defense electronics packed with magnets and motors, and the Pentagon is the buyer most motivated to fund domestic rare earth supply chains., Lockheed MartinIts missiles and aircraft consume heavy quantities of magnets, giving the domestic reshoring chain guaranteed demand through classified defense programs., RTX CorporationIt needs secure rare earth supply for engines, missiles, and radars, making it both a funder and beneficiary of the Western reshoring bet.15%
