The idea
I believe AI is starting to change how drugs get discovered and disease gets caught early, and over five to ten years that should mean longer, healthier lives and real revenue for the companies behind it. I spread this across big pharma pushing AI into their pipelines, the lab-tools and genomics suppliers everyone pays, the compute the field runs on, and early diagnostics, with just a small slice in the riskiest pure AI-drug-discovery names. I keep a cash buffer and avoid concentrating in any single company since this is a slow structural shift, not a quick trade.
What it owns
- Giant drugmakers are investing billions to use AI across drug discovery and development, giving them steadier ways to own the shift toward AI-driven medicine. · Eli LillyIt is the biggest spender on AI across drug discovery and development among giant drugmakers, with the scale to turn AI-found candidates into approved medicines., AstraZenecaIt is building an AI-first oncology pipeline, and catching and treating cancer better is one of the clearest ways people end up living longer., Novo NordiskIt partnered with OpenAI to apply frontier AI models to drug research, pairing a top metabolic-disease franchise with serious AI firepower., NovartisIt partners with Isomorphic Labs, the DeepMind spinout, to design drugs with AI and recently invested in RNA pipelines, betting real money on new discovery methods., Merck & Co.It has a pact with Google Cloud to run AI across its research, and it needs AI to find the next generation of drugs as current blockbusters age.32%
- Lab equipment and gene-sequencing suppliers are paid by every AI health effort, regardless of which approaches win. · Thermo Fisher ScientificIt supplies the lab instruments and services that nearly every drug discovery effort pays for, AI-driven or not, giving it broad exposure to the whole shift., DanaherIt supplies the bioprocessing equipment that turns discovered drugs into manufactured ones, so more AI-found medicines means more orders., IlluminaIt is the standard for gene sequencing, and reading genomes is raw material for both AI drug discovery and catching disease early., Agilent TechnologiesIt sells lab instruments and analysis tools across pharma and diagnostics, gaining steady exposure to research spending if AI makes drug hunting faster.23%
- AI models hunting for drugs or reading genomes run on massive computing power, and a handful of companies supply nearly all of it. · NVIDIAIt sells the chips that run nearly all AI models hunting for drugs or reading genomes, making it the default choice for AI biology computing., MicrosoftIt supplies the cloud and health AI tools that hospitals and drug companies build on, collecting rent on the shift without betting on any single drug.15%
- Companies using AI itself to design new medicines represent the purest and riskiest version of this take. · Tempus AIIt turns huge piles of patient data into AI tools doctors and drug companies use to diagnose and treat disease, representing the data layer of longer lives., SchrödingerIt sells the physics and AI software that simulates how molecules behave, making it the picks-and-shovels version of AI drug discovery., Recursion PharmaceuticalsIt runs one of the biggest AI-driven drug discovery platforms, using machine learning to find medicines humans would take decades to discover through trial and error., AbCellera BiologicsIt uses AI to discover antibody drugs for partners, winning if AI genuinely speeds up finding new medicines that extend healthy lives.13%
- Living longer starts with catching cancer and disease earlier, which is where AI reads data best and improves the most. · NateraIts blood tests catch cancer recurrence and genetic conditions earlier than older methods, addressing the diagnosis half of living longer., Guardant HealthIt is pushing blood-based cancer screening toward catching disease before symptoms show, exactly the kind of early detection that adds years to lives.10%
