The idea
I believe spending on water scarcity is about to surge over the next year or two, driven by chip fabs and AI data centers needing huge volumes of ultrapure and cooling water, plus federal money already flowing into replacing lead pipes and aging networks. Rather than utilities, I want the fixers: pipe and network replacement, treatment chemistry, pumps and engineering, smart meters that find leaks, with smaller slices in desalination and irrigation.
What it owns
- Federal funding for lead pipe removal and aging water network rebuilding is converting into orders for the pipes, valves, and fittings that go in the ground. · Advanced Drainage SystemsIt manufactures the plastic pipe installed during water network rebuilds, converting federal infrastructure funding directly into shipped orders., Core & MainIt distributes pipe, valves, and fittings to crews performing lead pipe replacement and network repair, seeing spending accelerate within quarters of municipal budget releases., Watts Water TechnologiesIt supplies the flow control and safety equipment specified in commercial and institutional water system upgrades, tracking spending on building and network modernization., Mueller Water ProductsIt makes the valves and hydrants installed with every replaced water main, directly tracking the pace of federal infrastructure funding reaching municipal projects., Zurn Elkay Water SolutionsIt covers water systems inside buildings including lead-safe drinking water gear for schools, sitting directly on federal funding for lead replacement retrofits.26%
- Chip fabs and data centers require vast amounts of ultrapure and cooling water, driving demand for treatment chemistry and monitoring systems that enable their operations. · EcolabIt supplies the treatment chemistry and services that chip fabs and data centers need to operate massive cooling and ultrapure water systems., VeraltoIt makes the instruments and analytics that measure water quality in fabs, plants, and utilities, capturing the testing layer of the infrastructure upgrade cycle., PentairIt sells the filtration and flow equipment that industrial and commercial buyers order when upgrading water systems, with orders reflecting actual spending momentum., A.O. SmithIt makes water treatment and heating systems for residential and commercial buildings, capturing the end-user side of a scarcity-driven upgrade cycle.24%
- Pumps and engineering firms capture water spending wherever infrastructure or industrial demand accelerates, making them the broadest exposure to the sector's growth. · XylemIt spans pumps, treatment, and smart infrastructure across the full water cycle, making it the broadest single exposure to accelerating global water technology spending., Tetra TechIt wins the engineering and consulting contracts awarded before large water infrastructure projects begin, with its backlog signaling early demand growth., Franklin ElectricIt manufactures pumps that move groundwater, becoming more essential as scarcity drives users toward wells and managed aquifer systems.18%
- Utilities lose substantial water to leaks, and smart meters offer an affordable way to identify and stop waste when budget cycles open. · Badger MeterIt sells the smart meters utilities install to detect leaks and prevent water loss, with deployment driven by the rising cost of scarcity., ItronIt builds the network technology connecting smart meters and enabling utilities to track water flow, riding demand for leak detection alongside meter upgrades.10%
- Farming consumes most of the world's fresh water, so efficient irrigation equipment is where scarcity forces the largest shifts in how water is used. · Valmont IndustriesIt manufactures irrigation infrastructure at scale, benefiting as water-scarce farming regions convert to mechanized systems that use less water., Lindsay CorporationIt sells precision irrigation systems that enable farms to grow crops with less water, capturing the efficiency gains farmers need under water constraint.6%
- Where fresh water is depleted, desalination and recycling become the only options, representing the purest exposure to regional water scarcity. · Energy RecoveryIt makes devices that reduce desalination's energy costs, the main constraint holding back deployment in water-scarce regions globally., Consolidated WaterIt builds and operates desalination plants in water-scarce regions, directly exposed to the shift toward desal capacity as fresh water depletes.6%
