Card Networks Tax the Agents

The idea
I believe that whichever AI agent platform wins, the actual payment still has to clear through the card networks, and that transaction volume only grows as agents start shopping and paying on our behalf. So the basket leans heavily into Visa and Mastercard, then rings them with the supporting cast: fraud and identity checks, virtual-card issuers that give each agent its own controlled card number, and the processors routing agent checkout. A small slice sits in the storefronts likely to host these agents, with some cash held back.
What it owns
- Card networks collect a fee on every transaction regardless of who initiates it, so agent purchases flowing through existing rails generate revenue without requiring new infrastructure. · Mastercard Inc.Mastercard operates the parallel toll booth and is building agent payment rails, capturing fees on every agent transaction that flows across its network., Visa Inc.Visa collects its standard interchange on every agent purchase plus new verification fees for confirming the agent is authorized to spend, assuming agent platforms route checkout through card rails., American Express Co.American Express owns both the card issuer and the network, allowing it to capture a larger share of agent spending when transactions run through its closed loop., Capital One FinancialCapital One owns the Discover network and can capture agent volume across the entire transaction chain from card issuance through settlement.35%
- Agent transactions require verification that the bot is authentic and authorized to spend, creating a new fee layer on top of standard payment processing. · Fair Isaac Corp.Fair Isaac's fraud scoring already evaluates every card transaction, and agent transactions add a new question about whether the bot is authorized to spend., Okta Inc.Proving an agent is authentic and legitimate is an identity verification problem that sits before the payment itself., Riskified Ltd.Riskified evaluates transaction risk at checkout, and vetting bot-initiated purchases creates a more complex and valuable fraud challenge.14%
- Single-use virtual card numbers with spending limits are the natural mechanism for giving each agent its own controlled payment instrument. · Marqeta Inc.Marqeta issues virtual card numbers with spending controls, the natural way to give each agent its own payment card with defined limits., WEX Inc.WEX specializes in issuing cards with tight restrictions on what they can purchase, exactly the control model that agent payment requires., Corpay Inc.Corpay processes virtual card payments between businesses, and agents handling procurement would use the same controlled-spend card rails.14%
- Processors connecting merchants to card networks handle the actual acceptance of agent-initiated payments at checkout. · Fidelity National Information ServicesFIS provides the infrastructure connecting banks to card networks, so agent transactions initiated at bank accounts still flow through its systems., Global Payments Inc.Global Payments accepts card payments on the merchant side, earning more per transaction as agents increase checkout volume across its merchant network., Shift4 PaymentsShift4 embeds card checkout into software and platforms, which is where agent purchases land when merchants adopt agent-ready checkout flows.14%
- The platforms building shopping agents are choosing card rails as the default way their agents pay. · Alphabet Inc.Alphabet is establishing the protocol for how agents pay, and that protocol settles on card networks, which is central to the take., Amazon.com Inc.Amazon operates one of the largest storefronts where agents actually initiate purchases, and those transactions currently settle through card networks.11%
