The idea
I believe AI's real bottleneck isn't chips, it's electricity: turbines, transformers, switchgear, and cooling all have to be built before a GPU ever runs. Rather than betting on one link in that chain, this take spreads across power generation, grid hardware, and inside-the-data-center equipment, blending steadier large caps with higher-torque names. It holds a cash reserve to add on weakness and is built to be held for years, so ordinary industrial-cycle swings don't shake it. I'd rethink it if power actually stopped being the constraint on AI buildout.
What it owns
- Transformers, switchgear, and installation crews form the scarcest link between power plants and data centers, determining how fast new supply reaches demand. · EatonIt supplies the electrical equipment connecting power generation to data center sites, and its order growth hinges on whether infrastructure truly constrains supply., Quanta ServicesIt provides the installation crews that actually build transmission lines and substations, making equipment backlogs meaningful only when workers are available to deploy them., HubbellIt manufactures transformers and grid components utilities need to move new generation to data center locations during sustained capital spending cycles., nVent ElectricIt manufactures electrical connection and protection equipment that flows into both grid upgrades and data center builds., Powell IndustriesIt makes switchgear for grid upgrades with a backlog that reflects scarcity in the equipment supply chain, benefiting from sustained pricing power., MYR GroupIt contracts for transmission and electrical installation work, offering a smaller-cap version of the bet that utilities keep awarding projects faster than crews can staff., Wesco InternationalIt distributes electrical equipment across the entire supply chain without betting on which link stays tightest, reflecting exposure to broad infrastructure buildout.32%
- Data centers need electrons before anything else, and operators are signing long-term contracts directly with power plant owners to lock in supply. · Constellation EnergyIt operates the largest US nuclear fleet and has signed long-term power contracts directly with data center operators seeking reliable round-the-clock electricity., VistraIt owns gas and nuclear plants in regions where data centers compete for scarce power, benefiting if electricity scarcity sustains wholesale price premiums., NextEra EnergyIt is the largest builder of new US power capacity, positioned to expand supply if every megawatt of new generation finds buyers as anticipated., Talen EnergyIt sells power directly to data centers from its nuclear plant, wagering that compute operators will pay premium prices for guaranteed electricity supply., CamecoIt supplies uranium that every nuclear expansion requires, with demand and contract pricing rising if nuclear remains central to powering data centers., OkloIt designs small reactors to sit next to data centers as the most direct physical answer to a power bottleneck, contingent on regulatory approval and customer commitments.27%
- Every megawatt arriving at a data center requires distribution equipment, backup power, and cooling systems before a processor can turn on. · VertivIt sells the power distribution and cooling equipment inside data centers, the final step before processors consume power., EMCOR GroupIt serves as one of the largest electrical contractors for data center wiring, converting construction spending into installed capacity and backlog., Comfort Systems USAIt installs mechanical and cooling systems inside data centers, with backlog growth tied to how fast new data center construction awards replace completed work., Modine ManufacturingIt supplies liquid cooling systems that newer AI chips require because air cooling cannot manage their heat output, benefiting from accelerating adoption.22%
- Building new turbines and reactors faces years-long order backlogs, making the companies that manufacture them the constraint on how fast supply can expand. · GE VernovaIt manufactures the gas turbines and grid equipment that new generation capacity runs on, with order backlogs stretching years into the future., BWX TechnologiesIt manufactures reactor components needed for nuclear expansion, whether from existing plants running harder or small reactors being newly built.11%
