The idea
I think AI is going hybrid: small models will handle private reasoning right on phones, PCs and cars, while only the hard problems get escalated to the cloud. As that intelligence becomes abundant, the real value shifts to whoever controls the operating systems, device chips, and the trust layer of identity, security, and payments that let AI act on your behalf. I built a barbell: big platform owners anchoring one end, trust and identity specialists on the other, with edge silicon and connectivity filling the middle, plus some cash on the side.
What it owns
- The operating systems and permission layers that control which AI models can act on devices collect rent regardless of which models win. · MicrosoftIt owns Windows and Azure, so local AI models run on the device while hard problems escalate to the cloud, letting it collect rent on both sides., AppleIt controls the operating system, silicon and permission layer on over a billion phones, making it the gatekeeper for which AI models can act privately., AlphabetIt controls Android and builds small open-weight models designed to run on devices, positioning it to profit if private reasoning moves to phones.26%
- Running capable AI models on phones, cars and PCs requires specialized chips designed by these companies to handle inference locally. · QualcommIt makes the processors that run AI locally in phones and cars, exactly where low-latency private reasoning is expected to happen., Arm HoldingsNearly every phone and car chip is built on its designs, so it collects a toll on most edge devices if intelligence spreads widely., NXP SemiconductorsIt supplies chips inside cars and embedded devices, two places where small models are expected to reason locally without cloud dependency., Advanced Micro DevicesIt builds processors for AI PCs where private local reasoning is expected to happen, benefiting if AI capability drives PC upgrades., AmbarellaIt makes chips that let cameras and cars see locally without sending video to the cloud, a pure bet on edge inference rather than centralized processing.22%
- When AI agents act on people's behalf, verifying identity and preventing hijacking becomes critical infrastructure that these security platforms provide. · CrowdStrikeIt secures endpoints across networks, and if AI agents act on people's behalf across millions of devices, endpoint security becomes more valuable., Palo Alto NetworksIt provides the broadest security platform covering the networks and connections where hybrid AI traffic between devices and cloud flows., OktaIt proves identity and permissions for applications, positioning it at the choke point if agents need identities and authorities the way users do., ZscalerIt verifies every connection between users, devices and services, making it valuable as AI traffic multiplies between edge and cloud., Gen DigitalIt protects consumer identity, and if people delegate actions to AI agents on phones, protecting identity becomes part of the trusted edge.19%
- AI agents that spend money on behalf of owners need permissioned payment networks, and the existing global card networks are the default choice. · VisaIt operates the payment networks that merchants and banks already trust, positioning it to carry transactions initiated by AI agents., MastercardIt operates global payment networks positioned to carry transactions that AI agents initiate on behalf of their owners., PayPalIt benefits if AI agents handling checkout and wallet permissions become a consumer product, though it depends on agents winning consumer adoption.15%
- Hybrid AI architecture requires constant traffic between devices and cloud infrastructure, which flows through these network and connectivity providers. · BroadcomIt makes the wireless and networking chips that keep edge devices connected to the cloud, essential plumbing for hybrid AI architectures., Cisco SystemsIt supplies the network backbone that traffic between edge devices and cloud models rides on, benefiting from hybrid AI adoption.10%
