The idea
I believe US electricity demand is about to surge from AI, EVs, and re-industrialization, and the buildout of power generation and transmission will run into a real shortage of the metals it needs. So I built a concentrated basket around that scarcity: copper miners as the core, plus aluminum smelting capacity, Western uranium and enrichment, and a rare earths position for the EV and grid layer, with a small cash buffer. I kept it to one or two strongest names per metal rather than spreading thin, and I'm holding for a deficit that plays out over years, not quarters.
What it owns
- Copper goes into every wire, transformer and data center, and new mines take a decade to open, so a lasting shortfall hits here first. · Freeport-McMoRanIt is the largest US copper producer, so output grows more valuable as transmission lines, data centers and EVs run into a persistent copper shortage., Global X Copper Miners ETFIt holds a spread of copper miners so the take captures the whole sector's response to structural shortfall rather than single producers alone., Southern CopperIt sits on some of the cheapest-to-mine copper reserves anywhere, staying profitable before any deficit bites and earning outsized margins if copper prices rise.38%
- If US electricity demand doubles, nuclear is the baseload answer, and the fuel to run it is scarce. · CamecoIt is the anchor of Western uranium supply at a moment when nuclear restart needs fuel that Russian-linked sources cannot provide., Centrus EnergyIt is the only US company enriching uranium, the step between mined uranium and reactor fuel, making it a chokepoint if nuclear power scales to meet demand.22%
- Long-distance transmission lines are mostly aluminum, so a grid buildout pulls this metal as hard as copper. · AlcoaIt is the US aluminum flagship in a world where smelting capacity is tight and just acquired South32's bauxite, alumina and aluminum assets to expand supply., Century AluminumIt owns actual US smelting capacity, which is nearly impossible to add quickly, so a jump in electricity demand pulling on aluminum lands directly on its order book.21%
- EVs and grid hardware also need rare earths, widening the bet beyond any one metal. · MP MaterialsIt mines and processes US rare earths, the magnets inside EV motors and grid hardware, covering the critical-minerals layer beyond copper, aluminum and uranium.11%
