AI Goes Optical
Christian@miamidegen
The idea
I believe AI data centers are outgrowing copper, pushing the industry toward optical links between GPUs and racks as speed and power demands rise. This take holds 15 names at equal weight across optical components, connectivity and networking chips, the compute and memory those links serve, and the power, cooling and materials the buildout needs. No single stock drives the result, and a small cash reserve sits ready to add on pullbacks. The plan is to hold through the buildout, not trade the headlines.
What will be bought
- The chips, cables, connectors and switches that move data between AI processors gain as links get faster. · Marvell Technology, Inc.It designs the signal processor chips inside optical transceivers that clean up and speed up light signals, plus builds custom AI chips for data centers., Astera Labs, Inc.It makes the chips that move data between GPUs, CPUs and memory inside AI servers, and is expanding into optical links as copper bandwidth constraints tighten., Credo Technology Group Holding LtdIt makes high-speed link chips, active electrical cables for the copper stage before full optical conversion, and optical signal processor chips., Arista Networks, Inc.It sells the Ethernet switches that connect thousands of GPUs, with every faster switch port requiring an optical module plugged into it., Amphenol CorporationIt makes the connectors, cables and fiber assemblies that physically wire AI racks together, whether signals travel over copper or light.31%
- The processors, memory and foundry whose growth drives the demand for faster optical links. · NVIDIA CorporationIts GPUs are the processors that optical links feed, and it is building optical networking capabilities into its own switch products., Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.It is the main challenger to rivals in AI chips, with every rack of its GPUs requiring the same fast optical links as competing systems., Micron Technology, Inc.It makes the high-bandwidth memory stacked next to AI chips, and faster optical links only deliver value when memory bandwidth can keep pace., Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company LimitedIt manufactures the chips for AI processor makers and handles the advanced packaging where optical components get integrated next to the chip.25%
- These companies make the lasers, transceivers and optical systems that carry AI traffic as light. · Coherent Corp.It makes the lasers and optical transceivers that convert electrical signals into light between GPUs and racks, serving as a core component in AI data center optical links., Lumentum Holdings Inc.It supplies the lasers inside optical modules and co-packaged optics, where the light connection sits next to the chip in AI systems., Ciena CorporationIt sells the optical gear that links data centers to each other over fiber, enabling AI clusters to spread across buildings and sites.19%
- Denser AI racks need more power, cooling and ultra-pure chip materials to run at all. · Vertiv Holdings CoIt sells the power and liquid cooling equipment AI data centers need as densely packed racks run hotter during the infrastructure buildout., nVent Electric plcIt makes the enclosures and liquid cooling systems that house and cool dense AI racks in modern data center deployments., Entegris, Inc.It supplies the ultra-pure materials and filters that chipmakers need to produce the advanced chips powering AI systems.19%
