The idea
I think useful quantum computing arrives well before the 2029-2030 dates most companies cite, so this leans hardest into the pure-play quantum computers, with IonQ's 256-qubit system in early 2027 as the first real test. Around that core I hold large tech names running serious quantum programs, toolmakers selling the picks and shovels to every lab, and quantum-safe security companies that get paid whether or not the machines show up on time. I keep cash a bit higher than usual since the pure-plays swing hard, and I'd rethink this if the early commercial timelines keep slipping.
What it owns
- These companies build only quantum computers, so they gain the most if useful machines arrive within a few years. · IonQ, Inc.It builds trapped-ion quantum computers and plans to ship its largest system for customer testing soon, marking the first major milestone for whether quantum computers become commercially useful., Rigetti Computing, Inc.It builds superconducting quantum computers and would see the biggest gains if useful machines arrive early, so it depends on hitting qubit and error-rate targets and landing outside contracts., D-Wave Quantum Inc.It already sells annealing quantum machines to businesses today for scheduling and optimization, making it the pure-play closest to earning real revenue now., Quantum Computing Inc.It bets on photonic quantum computers, an approach that could pay off if light-based machines work sooner than other designs, but it depends on showing real sales and technical progress.33%
- Big companies with serious quantum programs have main businesses that hold steady if quantum takes longer to mature. · International Business Machines CorporationIt runs one of the largest quantum programs with a public roadmap toward error-corrected machines, while its software and consulting business provides steady revenue if quantum takes longer., Alphabet Inc.Its quantum team leads on error correction, the critical problem that must be solved before quantum machines do useful work, while the rest of Google generates steady revenue., Honeywell International Inc.It holds a large stake in a publicly traded trapped-ion quantum company, giving it exposure to that builder's progress while its core business provides stability., NVIDIA CorporationIt is building software and hardware that link quantum processors to its GPUs, so most early useful quantum work is likely to run alongside its chips., Microsoft CorporationIt is pursuing topological qubits, a riskier design that could leapfrog other approaches if successful, and offers quantum access through its cloud platform.25%
- Banks and governments are paying for encryption upgrades now, so this layer earns money even if quantum computers arrive later than expected. · Cloudflare, Inc.It already deploys post-quantum encryption across its network and earns from upgrades now, so it profits even if quantum computers arrive later than expected., Palo Alto Networks, Inc.It sells security products to large companies and governments that must upgrade their encryption before quantum machines can break it., Arqit Quantum Inc.It sells software for delivering quantum-safe encryption keys to governments and banks, a small and specialized bet that depends on winning paying customers., SEALSQ CorpIt makes chips with post-quantum encryption built in, a small way to profit as devices get upgraded, but it depends on winning real orders rather than just announcing plans.15%
- They sell testing, cooling, control and laser equipment to every quantum lab, so they earn regardless of which machine design wins. · FormFactor, Inc.It sells probe cards and cryogenic test systems that quantum labs use to check chips at extreme cold, so it earns revenue regardless of which builder wins., Coherent Corp.It makes lasers and photonics components that trapped-ion and photonic quantum machines depend on, so more quantum computers mean more orders for its equipment., Keysight Technologies, Inc.It makes control electronics and test equipment that run and measure qubits across many labs, a supplier role that does not depend on picking a winning machine design.14%
