AI Power Bottleneck

The idea
I believe the real AI bottleneck over the next couple years isn't chips, it's power: the transformers, switchgear, cooling, and generation needed to get new data centers online. This take owns grid and electrical equipment makers as the core, data-center power and cooling suppliers and buildout contractors as direct beneficiaries, and a small, spread-out sleeve of generation names as ballast rather than a bet on electricity prices. No single position exceeds 15%, and it keeps a cash buffer. I'd rethink it if the physical buildout itself slowed rather than just AI software sentiment cooling.
What it owns
- Transformers, switchgear, and power distribution systems have multi-year backlogs and control how fast new data-center capacity can connect to the grid. · Eaton CorporationIt makes the switchgear and power management equipment every new AI data center needs between the grid and the racks, depending on data-center electrical spending remaining a growing share of orders., GE VernovaIt sells the gas turbines and grid equipment that let new data-center capacity connect and run, holding as long as hyperscaler capex turns into turbine and grid-equipment orders., Hubbell IncorporatedIt supplies utility-grade components, connectors, and transformers that grid upgrades consume in bulk, winning on the volume of buildout the take expects., Powell IndustriesIt is a focused switchgear maker with a pure exposure to electrical distribution equipment constraints, depending on data-center and utility orders extending its backlog., nVent ElectricIt makes the enclosures and liquid-cooling connections in the data-center power path, depending on its data-center segment growing faster than legacy business.34%
- Backup power systems, chillers, and liquid cooling are purchased with every new data center, making them direct beneficiaries of facility buildout. · Vertiv HoldingsIt supplies the power distribution, backup systems, and cooling in nearly every AI data center, making it the most direct equipment play on the take., Trane TechnologiesIt provides large-scale cooling capacity and chillers that data-center operators buy in volume, a direct infrastructure beneficiary of facility buildout., Modine ManufacturingIt supplies liquid cooling for data centers, directly benefiting from denser AI racks that require liquid cooling specifically., Johnson ControlsIt supplies chillers and building systems keeping data centers running, qualifying as a direct data-center beneficiary if that demand stays visible in orders.19%
- Installation contractors book labor orders tied to the same grid and electrical equipment spending wave that powers new data-center deployment. · Quanta ServicesIt is the biggest builder of transmission lines and grid connections, benefiting from long interconnection queues and utility spending to clear them., Comfort Systems USAIt installs the mechanical and electrical systems inside data centers, getting paid per facility built and tracking the physical spending the take follows., MYR GroupIt builds the transmission and electrical infrastructure bringing new power to data centers, benefiting from sustained utility transmission spending., IES HoldingsIt does electrical work inside data centers and added steel and construction capacity through acquisition, depending on data-center electrical demand filling its book.17%
- A spread-out group of power producers supplies the firm electricity data centers require, sized to provide ballast rather than concentrate the take on any single generator. · Constellation EnergyIts nuclear fleet supplies the reliable around-the-clock power AI data centers sign long-term contracts for, ballast for the equipment core of the take., Vistra CorpIts gas and nuclear plants supply the firm generation data centers require, sized as part of a spread-out support group rather than a concentrated bet., Talen EnergyIt has signed power deals directly with data-center operators, proving the premise that compute buyers will pay for guaranteed electricity., NRG EnergyIt provides Texas power market coverage where much of the data-center buildout is landing, sized small and dependent on Texas power demand from data centers.13%
- Regulated utilities and broad grid holdings steady the take when equipment stocks wobble, earning on grid investment independent of wholesale power prices. · First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge Smart Grid ETFIt is a basket of grid-modernization companies providing broad coverage of electrical buildout so no single equipment maker has to carry the theme., NextEra EnergyIt is a regulated utility that earns on grid and generation investment independent of wholesale power prices, providing ballast tied to rate-base growth.9%
