The idea
I believe collector money keeps flowing into graded cards, comics, toys, and vintage stuff over the next couple of years, with comics eventually rivaling Pokemon cards in that world. Rather than holding the collectibles themselves, this owns the rails: marketplaces where they trade hands, the companies printing the cards and toys, the studios behind the characters on the covers, and physical resale and coin shops catching the same spending. It stays concentrated in the fastest-moving names for this wave, with 10% held in cash to add on down days.
What it owns
- Every comic, card, or figure that changes hands pays a toll to the platform it sold on. · eBay Inc.It takes a cut of every graded card and comic that changes hands on its marketplace, so collectibles volume growth flows directly to fees., GameStop Corp.It is pushing graded cards and collectibles into its stores, putting the business in the path of collector spending., Etsy Inc.It runs a marketplace for vintage goods where more collector spending means more fees., PayPal Holdings Inc.A huge share of person-to-person collectibles sales settle through it, so it earns a small toll on the trades., The RealReal Inc.It gets paid every time a luxury or vintage item resells, riding the same wave of collector spending.36%
- The companies actually making the cards and collectible toys sell more of everything when collecting is hot. · Hasbro Inc.It prints Magic: The Gathering and gets paid at the source when collectible card sales boom., Funko Inc.Its entire business is collectible pop culture figures, making it a direct way to own the bet that collecting keeps growing., Mattel Inc.It makes Hot Wheels, which has a serious adult collector scene that benefits when grown-ups spend on collectible toys., JAKKS Pacific Inc.It makes licensed toys tied to the characters collectors chase, so a bigger collectibles market means more demand for its lines., Build-A-Bear Workshop Inc.It has turned limited plush drops into a collector business with people lining up for releases the way they do for card sets.28%
