The idea
I believe AI-driven discovery and in-app checkout inside Instagram and WhatsApp start pulling commerce spend away from Amazon over the next year or two, with Meta's ad and agent engine capturing the storefront while Amazon keeps the warehouse. The take is anchored in META near a position cap, backed by storefront rails, payment and checkout networks, commerce ad-tech, and the carriers who deliver what Amazon doesn't. I hold cash aside to add to META on dips, and I'm watching for this shift to show up in the numbers within a year or two.
What it owns
- Every transaction completed inside a Meta app requires a payment processor and settlement layer, routing checkout volume and fees away from Amazon's optimized system. · PayPal HoldingsIt functions as the primary buy button inside social and chat checkout, settling transactions that escape Amazon's own payment processing., VisaIt settles in-app and card-not-present transactions at higher fees than Amazon's optimized flow, capturing the shift in where and how shoppers pay., MastercardIt collects interchange and network fees from every card transaction that routes through Meta's checkout instead of Amazon's, regardless of which merchant or shopper wins., Affirm HoldingsIt converts impulse purchases in social feeds through buy-now-pay-later, a checkout option that spreads as independent merchants compete for sales on Meta's surfaces., BlockIt provides checkout and payment rails for independent sellers building volume outside Amazon, from Square point-of-sale to Cash App buyer networks.28%
- The take centers on Meta turning Instagram and WhatsApp into primary shopping destinations, capturing commerce spend that Amazon has traditionally controlled through discovery and in-app checkout. · Meta PlatformsIt provides the surface where discovery and checkout move together inside a social app, directly capturing spend from Amazon's retail and ads business.22%
- As merchants shift sales away from Amazon to Meta's platforms, they rely on these backend infrastructure providers to run storefronts, manage customers, and process cross-border transactions. · ShopifyIt powers the backend infrastructure for most merchants selling through social and agent-driven checkout, making it the default rails when sales move off Amazon., Wix.comIt builds storefronts for small merchants leaving Amazon's shelf, capturing shoppers through owned surfaces as commerce spreads across Meta., KlaviyoIt provides the marketing layer for merchants building independent storefronts, letting them own their customer relationships and drive repeat purchases., Global-E OnlineIt abstracts away cross-border complexity, duties, and currency conversion for merchants selling direct to consumers across borders through Meta's borderless discovery., GoDaddyIt equips micro-merchants with domain, storefront, and checkout tools to sell directly where their customers already browse, inside Instagram and WhatsApp.20%
- Orders placed through Meta's apps bypass Amazon's fulfillment network and ship through independent carriers and third-party logistics providers instead. · United Parcel ServiceIt carries non-Amazon parcel volume as merchants fulfill orders placed through Meta's apps, benefiting if off-Amazon commerce grows faster than Amazon's internal logistics expands., FedExIt handles the other major carrier for independent merchants shipping orders born inside Meta's discovery and checkout surfaces., GXO LogisticsIt provides fulfillment and warehouse infrastructure for brands growing off-Amazon volume without building Amazon-scale operations internally.13%
- Product discovery budgets follow shoppers off Amazon's walls to the platforms where they browse, and these ad networks capture the shift in where retailers spend to reach buyers. · AppLovinIt routes e-commerce ad spend across apps and networks outside Amazon's walls, capturing budgets as merchants stop relying on Amazon's retail media., CriteoIt operates retail media networks for every retailer outside Amazon, capturing budgets as advertisers follow shoppers away from Amazon's walled garden.8%
