The idea
I believe the AI buildout runs on metal, and new mine supply can't catch up for years, so I own the producers behind it: copper as the core for wiring and grid buildout, uranium for the nuclear comeback, and silver and aluminum for solar and conductor lines. Large producers carry most of the weight, smaller miners and developers get thinner slices for extra torque, and I keep a cash sleeve to add if metal prices dip. This is a structural, multi-year bet, not a trade on any single quarter.
What it owns
- Copper is the essential metal in data center wiring, substations, and transmission lines, and mine supply grows slowly relative to buildout demand. · Freeport-McMoRanAs the largest US copper miner, it directly captures demand from data centers, substations, and transmission lines that require copper wiring., Teck ResourcesIt is shifting production toward copper with new projects coming online as demand from the power buildout arrives before supply expansion completes., Southern CopperOperating with among the lowest production costs, it remains profitable across copper price cycles while capturing upside when prices rise from supply tightness., Global X Copper Miners ETFThis ETF holds a basket of copper mining companies, allowing exposure to the sector-wide squeeze between data center demand and slow supply growth., Hudbay MineralsOperating copper mines in the Americas near US grid and data center demand, it gains outsized leverage to copper price moves relative to major producers., Ero CopperAs a smaller copper producer, its stock moves with greater magnitude than large miners when copper prices respond to demand and supply tightness.34%
- Round-the-clock power for AI compute is driving renewed investment in nuclear reactors, which require steady uranium supply and enrichment capacity. · CamecoThe largest Western uranium producer with stakes in Westinghouse, it earns from both fuel supply and reactor manufacturing for nuclear's return to baseload power., NexGen EnergyIt is developing Rocket, positioned to be the largest new Western uranium mine, arriving as reactor demand for data center power accelerates., Uranium Energy CorpIt is restarting US uranium production as government and utility priorities shift toward domestic fuel sourcing for the expanding nuclear fleet., Centrus EnergyAs the only US uranium enrichment company, it holds monopoly control over a critical step between mined ore and reactor fuel amid insufficient Western capacity., Denison MinesAs a development-stage company rather than a producer, it swings more sharply with uranium price movements while advancing its Wheeler River project.24%
- Silver is a critical input in solar panels and electrical contacts throughout the power infrastructure built around data centers. · Wheaton Precious MetalsInstead of operating mines, it purchases silver at fixed prices from other producers, capturing upside from silver demand in solar panels without mining cost exposure., Pan American SilverAs one of the world's largest silver producers, it directly captures demand from solar panels and electrical switchgear in the power infrastructure buildout., Hecla MiningThe largest US silver miner with exposure concentrated in silver, it moves with greater magnitude when silver prices respond to solar and grid demand.14%
- Long-distance transmission lines carrying power to data centers are strung with aluminum, so grid expansion directly pulls aluminum demand upward. · AlcoaThe major Western aluminum producer whose metal forms the conductors in transmission lines built to serve expanding grid demand from data centers., Century AluminumOperating US aluminum smelters at a time of domestic scarcity and tariff protection, it gains outsized leverage to increased grid spending on domestic conductor metal.10%
- Giant diversified mining companies with large copper operations provide portfolio stability while maintaining exposure to the same metals demand. · Rio TintoThis diversified miner produces both copper and aluminum with significant copper growth from Oyu Tolgoi, maintaining thematic exposure across two conductor metals., BHP GroupThe world's largest miner with copper as its primary growth driver provides portfolio scale while maintaining focus on the metals this take depends on.10%
