Ukraine Talks Fail, Oil Spikes

The idea
I'm betting that Russia-Ukraine peace talks keep failing, which keeps Russian fuel off the market and pushes oil and especially diesel prices higher. To play it, I lean heaviest on US refiners, since their margins widen when diesel stays scarce, round that out with US oil producers for the broader oil spike, and add product and crude tanker owners who benefit as fuel has to travel farther to fill the gap. I kept the mix concentrated rather than spread thin, held some cash to add if prices dip, and would rethink the whole thing if talks actually produce a durable ceasefire.
What it owns
- Refiners earn the spread between crude costs and diesel prices, and that spread widens when Russian diesel is kept off the market. · Valero EnergyThe largest US refiner, so it captures the widest profit margin on every barrel converted to diesel when Russian supply stays blocked., Marathon PetroleumIt produces significant volumes of diesel, so profits rise when Russian fuel remains scarce and diesel commands premium prices relative to crude., Phillips 66Its refineries earn more when diesel is tight, though the company also operates chemicals and pipelines that dilute the refining profit boost., HF SinclairIt runs inland refineries that purchase discounted regional crude and sell diesel at globally set prices, earning a fat spread when Russian supply is cut off., PBF EnergyIt swings harder than larger refiners when margins move, making it a concentrated bet that diesel stays expensive as long as Russian exports remain blocked., Par Pacific HoldingsIt converts crude into diesel and fuel oil, so its earnings rise when refining margins expand during supply disruptions., CVR EnergyIt operates Midcontinent refineries that buy local discounted crude and sell diesel into a global market starved of Russian barrels.36%
- US drillers sell crude at whatever price the market sets, so profits surge if failed talks send oil prices higher. · Exxon MobilIt produces crude and also refines it, gaining from higher oil prices and wider diesel margins simultaneously with less volatility than pure drillers., ConocoPhillipsIt sells crude oil directly, so earnings move in line with the oil price and benefit from any sustained spike driven by stalled negotiations., EOG ResourcesIt pumps shale oil at low cost, so each dollar gained on the oil price flows almost entirely to profit., Occidental PetroleumIt carries higher debt than most producers, so each extra dollar of oil price gain translates into outsized gains for shareholders., Diamondback EnergyIt drills exclusively in the Permian basin, the largest US oil field, making its earnings highly sensitive to crude price moves., Devon EnergyIts cash generation depends heavily on selling crude at market prices, so it benefits directly from any sustained oil price increase.30%
- When Russian diesel cannot be sold normally, replacement fuel must travel longer distances, and ships carrying it earn higher freight rates. · Scorpio TankersIt operates a large product tanker fleet that earns higher rates when diesel shipments must sail longer routes to replace unavailable Russian barrels., International SeawaysIt carries refined fuels and crude oil both, profiting from any spike in either market, and is expanding its crude tanker fleet., Ardmore ShippingIt owns only product and chemical tankers, so it is a pure play on diesel needing to travel longer distances while Russian exports stay blocked., TORMIt owns product tankers that earn higher rates when diesel must be shipped over extended routes to compensate for missing Russian supply.17%
- Disrupted shipping routes and sanctions create demand for longer oil voyages, allowing tanker owners to charge more for transport. · FrontlineIt operates very large crude tankers that command higher rates when oil shipments must navigate around sanctions and follow longer routes., DHT HoldingsIt leases most of its large crude tankers on short-term contracts, so it captures rate increases quickly when an oil spike drives shipping demand.7%
