The idea
I think the AI-driven debt and lending boom is overextended and a sharp downturn hits within a year, so instead of just hiding out I want to own the businesses that actually gain when credit cracks. The core is restructuring advisors and distressed debt buyers, the sharpest expression of the call, backed by trade-down retailers, pawn lenders, and auto parts stores that hold up or grow when consumers get squeezed. I keep it concentrated in these bust winners rather than spreading into unrelated names, and I hold some cash in reserve to add if the downturn actually plays out.
What it owns

- Investment banks and advisory firms earn fees guiding companies through bankruptcy and debt restructuring, so rising defaults from overleveraged borrowing create more work and higher revenue. · Houlihan LokeyThe firm handles more corporate bankruptcies and restructurings than peers, so a rise in defaults and distressed workouts from overleveraged companies directly drives its advisory fee revenue., FTI ConsultingIt advises companies burdened by excess debt through restructuring and turnaround assignments, capturing fees that multiply when defaults and insolvencies accelerate in a downturn., PJT PartnersIt advises large corporations on debt restructuring and distressed situations, earning fees that accelerate when a wave of defaults forces borrowers to renegotiate or refinance on harsher terms., LazardIt maintains a global restructuring practice that grows when corporations in multiple countries default on overleveraged debt, offsetting a decline in merger advisory fees with distressed advisory gains., Moelis & CompanyIt pivots its revenue mix toward restructuring and bankruptcy advisory work when deal activity dries up, benefiting from the surge in distressed mandates during a credit crack.27%
- Debt collection firms purchase defaulted consumer loans at steep discounts and collect on them, so a wave of charge-offs from stressed borrowers supplies cheap inventory and collection opportunities. · PRA GroupIt purchases charged-off consumer debt at deep discounts and collects on it, so rising defaults and distressed sales from banks provide cheaper inventory and stronger collection flows., Encore Capital GroupIt buys defaulted consumer loans at discounts and collects on the balances, generating revenue that grows when a credit crack pushes charge-offs higher and improves collection rates.12%
- Auto parts retailers benefit when tight credit and thin household savings extend vehicle ownership, pushing consumers to repair aging cars rather than finance new ones. · O'Reilly AutomotiveIt sells the replacement parts needed when drivers repair aging vehicles instead of buying new ones, capturing margin from the shift to maintenance spending that peaks during credit crunches., AutoZoneIt caters to do-it-yourself vehicle repair, the lowest-cost maintenance option, gaining sales when tight credit and stretched budgets push drivers to extend vehicle life rather than buy new.9%
- Pawn shops serve as emergency lenders when bank credit tightens, collecting more collateral and issuing larger loan volumes as households seek fast cash outside the banking system. · FirstCash HoldingsIts pawn shops issue collateral-backed loans when bank lending tightens, growing its loan balances and inventory as households turn to pawn counters for emergency cash., EZCorpIt operates pawn shops with less diversification than larger competitors, so a credit crunch that drives consumers to pawn collateral generates faster revenue and loan balance growth.8%
