Electrons Gate AI

The idea
I believe electricity, not chips, is the real bottleneck for AI, since data center demand is outrunning what the grid can supply. So this take owns the whole chain: power generators cashing in today, the grid and turbine equipment makers with years-long backlogs, and the fuel feeding them. I keep speculative nuclear to a small sleeve since those plants are years from revenue, hold some cash, and avoid betting big on any single name. I'd rethink this if the grid build-out caught up with demand faster than expected.
What it owns
- Nuclear and gas plants take years to build, so today's fleet sells electrons into markets where data centers are concentrating demand and supply remains tight. · VistraIt sells power from gas and nuclear plants into regions where data centers are concentrating, so it earns today from tight supply without waiting for new capacity., Constellation EnergyIts nuclear fleet is already signing premium power contracts with data center buyers at prices that reflect scarcity of clean, reliable electrons., Talen EnergyIt sells electrons directly to data centers under long-term contracts at negotiated rates, earning from the gap between generation cost and what buyers will pay for reliable supply., NRG EnergyIt sells power in Texas where much of the new data center load is landing, without regulators capping what it can earn from tight supply., Public Service Enterprise GroupIts nuclear plants sit inside a regulated utility, so it earns from scarce clean electrons with less volatility than pure power generators.27%
- Transformers, switchgear and data center electrical hardware form the physical chokepoint between generation plants and server racks, with lead times measured in years. · EatonEvery megawatt reaching a server passes through its switchgear and power distribution equipment, so data center construction directly drives its orders and backlog., Quanta ServicesIt builds the transmission lines and substations connecting new power sources to new data center clusters, work that grows as construction spending accelerates., HubbellIt makes transformers and connectors, both of which face years-long waits, giving it pricing power as data center and grid projects compete for limited supply., VertivIt sells power distribution and cooling equipment inside data centers, making it the last electrical gate every server rack passes through., nVent ElectricIt makes electrical enclosures and connection hardware for the grid and data center equipment that larger suppliers install, riding the same infrastructure buildout.22%
- Turbines and generator sets have years-long manufacturing backlogs, which means suppliers control the pace at which new power capacity can be added. · GE VernovaIts multi-year backlog for gas turbines means it controls how fast data center operators can add new generation on site or help utilities expand., CaterpillarIt makes the large backup generators data centers install on site, and lead times for those units stretch as construction activity outpaces manufacturing capacity., CumminsIt builds the engines and generator sets data centers use for backup and bridge power, so its business grows if those orders keep rising as a share of total shipments., Bloom EnergyIts fuel cells let data centers generate power on site when grid supply is too slow, avoiding interconnection delays if operators keep ordering units beyond pilot stage.18%
- More gas burned and more reactors running means fuel producers and pipeline operators gain pricing power from higher volumes and longer-term contracted demand. · EQT CorporationAs the largest US natural gas producer near the mid-Atlantic data center corridor, it benefits when power plants burn more gas to meet AI-driven demand., Williams CompaniesIt collects tolls on gas flowing through its pipelines regardless of price, so higher volumes burned for power generation directly increase its revenue., CamecoIf nuclear reactors run harder or new ones get built for data centers, uranium demand rises against supply that takes years to expand, favoring the largest Western producer.13%
- Pre-revenue nuclear companies stand to benefit if new small reactors get licensed and ordered to power data centers, but licensing and real customer orders remain uncertain. · OkloIt is years from revenue but offers direct exposure to small modular reactors if they get licensed and ordered for data center power, a small bet on a regulatory and commercial milestone., NuScale PowerIts small modular reactor design has US regulatory approval, positioning it if data center demand finally converts to orders for new nuclear capacity., Centrus EnergyNew small reactors need specialized enriched fuel that only this US company produces, so it benefits if domestic reactor startups move from development to operation.10%
