Cheaper Diesel Winners

The idea
I think diesel is the real story right now, trading near twice crude's price instead of the usual 20 to 30% premium, and I see signs that could unwind soon through eased Russia sanctions and a halt to refinery strikes, pushing more fuel back onto the market. So I built a basket of businesses where diesel, jet fuel, or marine fuel is the biggest swing cost: airlines, cruise lines, parcel and trucking companies, fuel retailers, and discount stores whose shoppers feel pump relief first.
What will be bought
- Jet fuel is a major airline cost and moves with diesel prices, so cheaper refined fuel flows directly to profit margins. · Delta Air LinesJet fuel is one of its largest costs, and recent profit cuts tied to fuel prices could ease if refined fuel gets cheaper without demand softening., United Airlines HoldingsIt consumes substantial jet fuel relative to revenue, so its earnings and stock price tend to reflect fuel cost changes more sharply than competitors when diesel prices shift., Southwest AirlinesFuel is one of its largest costs on a domestic schedule, so cheaper jet fuel goes almost directly to profit if savings aren't competed away in fares., Alaska Air GroupFuel is a bigger cost slice for a mid-size carrier, so falling jet fuel moves profit more sharply than at larger, more diversified airlines., American Airlines GroupIt carries more debt than peers, so each dollar saved on jet fuel is a bigger share of thin profit, amplifying sensitivity to falling fuel costs.32%
- Ships burn marine fuel that tracks diesel, and cruise lines carry heavy debt, so fuel savings have an outsized impact on earnings. · Carnival CorporationIt operates the largest cruise fleet and buys more marine fuel than peers, so its costs fall the most when marine fuel prices decline., Royal Caribbean CruisesIt captures fuel savings with lower financial risk than more indebted cruise operators while benefiting from falling marine fuel prices., Norwegian Cruise Line HoldingsHeavy debt means each dollar saved on marine fuel is a larger share of profit, making it the most sensitive cruise line to falling fuel prices.18%
- Trucks and planes run on diesel and jet fuel, and lower fuel costs improve both operating margins and the economics of shipping. · FedExIt operates both large jet and truck fleets, and fuel surcharges reset with a lag, so falling diesel and jet fuel widens margins temporarily., Knight-Swift TransportationDiesel is one of its largest costs after driver pay, so cheaper diesel is a direct boost to profit as the biggest truckload carrier., J.B. Hunt Transport ServicesCheaper diesel lowers truck costs and gives freight shippers more room to send goods, supporting growth in its truck and intermodal volumes., United Parcel ServiceIt buys huge amounts of diesel and jet fuel, and fuel surcharges lag costs, so falling refined fuel leaves more profit per package temporarily.17%
- Gas station chains earn wider margins per gallon when wholesale fuel prices fall faster than retail pump prices adjust downward. · Murphy USAIt benefits when wholesale fuel falls faster than pump prices adjust downward, widening profit per gallon on high-volume sales., Casey's General StoresPump prices in rural Midwest markets lag when wholesale costs drop, so its fuel margins widen as wholesale prices fall.10%
- Lower-income households spend a large share of their budgets on fuel, so cheaper gas frees money that flows into discount store purchases. · Dollar GeneralIts rural and lower-income shoppers spend heavily on fuel and drive long distances, so cheaper gas frees money for store purchases., Dollar TreeIts budget shoppers feel gas price moves acutely, so lower pump prices free cash for everyday purchases at discount stores.9%
