Battery Slowdown Winners

The idea
CATL's weak quarter tells me battery and EV profits are softening, and I can't short it directly, so I own what benefits either way. If it's soft EV demand, I hold hybrid and truck-heavy automakers plus gas drivetrain and repair-parts businesses and oil and refining. If it's a cell price war, I hold the big battery buyers, grid storage, and utilities who get cheaper projects. I keep 10% in cash since this partly hinges on how upcoming earnings land.
What it owns
- Longer vehicle lifecycles for gas-powered cars drive sustained demand for engines, transmissions, and replacement parts. · O'Reilly AutomotiveIt sells repair parts to shops and consumers, and older gas cars on the road generate more of that business., AutoZoneIt sells parts to maintain aging gas vehicles, and longer car lifecycles increase parts demand., Allison TransmissionIt makes transmissions for trucks and commercial vehicles, which stay in demand longer as battery adoption slows., Cummins Inc.It manufactures diesel and gas engines for commercial vehicles, and slower electrification extends demand for its core products., Dorman ProductsIt manufactures replacement parts for vehicles in service, and an aging fleet keeps demand steady.25%
- Companies that purchase battery cells to build grid storage projects see lower input costs and stronger project economics when cell prices fall. · Fluence EnergyIt assembles grid-scale batteries from cells purchased on the market, so falling cell prices flow directly to its gross margins., NextEra EnergyIt builds more battery storage than any other US utility, making falling cell prices a direct boost to project returns., Generac HoldingsIt sells home backup power and batteries, so lower cell costs improve margins on its storage products., The AES CorporationIt develops utility-scale battery storage projects, and cheaper cells improve the return on each installation.22%
- Slower EV adoption extends the life of gasoline and diesel demand beyond current forecasts. · Exxon MobilIts oil business benefits from sustained gasoline and diesel consumption as EV adoption slows., ChevronIts refining and production business benefits from sustained demand if fewer vehicles transition to electric powertrains., Valero EnergyIt refines crude into gasoline, and sustained fuel consumption as EV growth cools supports refining margins., Marathon PetroleumIt operates major US gasoline refineries, and longer vehicle lifecycles sustain fuel demand and refining profits.22%
- Automakers that prioritized hybrids and gas trucks over full electric lineups benefit when EV demand softens. · Toyota Motor CorporationIts hybrid lineup becomes the natural choice for buyers backing away from full electric vehicles., Honda Motor Co.It has shifted focus toward hybrid technology, which gains market share when EV demand weakens., General MotorsIts profits come primarily from gas trucks and SUVs, and softer EV demand means smaller losses on battery vehicles.21%
