The idea
I believe AI data centers are hitting a real power shortage that lasts a year or two, and I want to own the companies cashing in while it does. The basket splits across power producers selling into tight markets, the turbine and grid gear makers with packed order books, natural gas for quick-build plants, and a small onsite power sleeve for sites that can't wait on the grid. I skipped small reactors and uranium since they pay off on a slower clock than this bet. Since these stocks can peak before the shortage actually eases, I'm holding about 12% in cash to add if prices drop.
What it owns
- Turbines, transformers and switchgear take years to manufacture in quantity, so their makers can raise prices while supply remains constrained. · GE VernovaMakes the gas turbines that new power plants require, and its order backlog is one of the tightest bottlenecks in the energy buildout., Quanta ServicesIts crews build the transmission lines and substations connecting new power plants to data centers, with demand outpacing available capacity., Eaton CorporationSells electrical distribution equipment like switchgear that every new data center must purchase, with orders growing faster than production., Powell IndustriesA smaller maker of switchgear, the heavy equipment routing power inside plants and data centers where lead times remain extended., Hubbell Inc.Makes the electrical components utilities use to expand and upgrade the grid as power demand from data centers rises., Vertiv HoldingsSupplies power and cooling equipment positioned next to servers in AI data centers, with orders outpacing its shipment capacity.31%
- They sell electricity into markets where data center demand is pushing prices higher, so a tighter grid translates into faster profit growth. · Constellation EnergyOperates the largest US nuclear fleet, providing the always-on power that data center builders pay premium rates to secure., Vistra Corp.Sells power into Texas, one of the tightest grids for new data center connections, so grid shortages show up directly in its contract prices., Talen EnergySupplies power from its plants directly to data centers under long-term contracts priced above open market rates., NRG EnergyOperates a large gas power fleet that earns more when grids face tight supply conditions.27%
- Gas plants are the fastest new power source to build, so growing data center demand means more natural gas burned and more volume through pipelines. · EQT CorporationThe largest US natural gas producer, positioned close to mid-Atlantic data center clusters where gas demand from new power plants is rising., Williams CompaniesOperates major natural gas pipelines and builds onsite power infrastructure next to data centers as this demand accelerates., Expand EnergyA major gas producer that benefits when gas-fired power plants are built to supply data center demand., Kinder MorganOperates one of the largest natural gas pipeline networks in the country, so increased gas burned for power generation means higher volumes.21%
- Data centers that cannot wait for grid connections buy their own power generation on site, which represents the quickest new demand in this take. · Bloom EnergyIts fuel cells enable data centers to generate their own power on site rather than waiting years for grid connections., Caterpillar Inc.Makes backup generators, small gas turbines and pipeline engines that data centers and gas producers are purchasing in growing volumes.9%
