The idea
I don't think India's demographic dividend turns into jobs fast enough, and I think politics keeps foreign capital cautious while the growth story everyone's priced in doesn't fully show up. Since I can't short it directly, I own the other side: rival manufacturing hubs picking up the factories, AI and software names eating the outsourced IT work, and energy exporters that squeeze India's import bill.
What it owns
- If India fails to convert its young workforce into manufacturing jobs, the factories and investment will land in Mexico and Southeast Asia instead. · VanEck Vietnam ETFVietnam competes directly for the electronics and apparel production India was positioned to win from China, absorbing those jobs if India stumbles., iShares MSCI Mexico ETFMexico absorbs the manufacturing capacity and investment that India was expected to capture, and this fund owns the broad bet on that nearshoring shift., iShares MSCI Indonesia ETFIndonesia has the young population pitch of India but with commodities and factory momentum, capturing capital that sours on India's politics and prospects., Sea LimitedIt bets that Southeast Asian consumer growth, powered by the manufacturing and jobs that flow away from India, becomes the real emerging-market payoff., Corporacion Inmobiliaria VestaIt builds and rents the industrial parks where nearshoring tenants locate, so it gets paid directly when factories choose Mexico over India., CemexEvery new factory and industrial park in Mexico requires concrete, so it benefits directly when nearshoring construction activity replaces India-bound investment.30%
- Artificial intelligence is automating the coding, customer service, and back-office work that forms the core of India's IT services export industry. · MicrosoftIts Copilot tools automate the coding and support work that Indian IT firms charge for, capturing the margin India loses to AI displacement., ServiceNowIt automates IT service management and help desk work, a core Indian outsourcing product, so its adoption directly erodes offshore labor demand., Palantir TechnologiesIt sells software that replaces the armies of consultants and systems integrators that India exports through labor arbitrage and offshore hiring., SalesforceIts AI agents automate customer service work, a major segment of what gets outsourced to India, so adoption erodes the call-center side of India's export economy., SAP SEIt automates finance, human resources, and supply chain back offices, the business-process work Indian firms perform offshore, eroding demand for that labor.26%
- India imports most of its oil, natural gas, and gold, so pressure on its trade balance and currency benefits the companies that sell these commodities. · SPDR Gold SharesCurrency stress drives Indian households and the central bank to buy gold, and it also buffers the take if emerging markets face broader pressure., Exxon MobilIndia imports the majority of its crude oil, so sustained energy costs pressure its trade deficit and currency, which benefits oil exporters., Cheniere EnergyIt ships the liquefied natural gas India imports for power generation and industry, benefiting from India's heavy energy import bill and long-term contracts., ShellIt supplies the oil and liquefied natural gas that India must import in large volumes, so India's energy dependence funds Shell's growth.22%
- Money leaving expensive Indian markets will seek other pools in Asia, where China and Japan offer cheaper valuations and steadier alternatives. · iShares MSCI Japan ETFJapan draws the cautious Asia allocations that leave India when investors lose confidence in its story but still want regional exposure., iShares China Large-Cap ETFForeign capital nervous about India's valuations and politics rotates into China, the largest alternative pool in emerging markets, and this fund owns that rotation., KraneShares CSI China Internet ETFChinese internet companies trade far cheaper than India's priced-for-perfection market, so money hunting for emerging-market growth at reasonable valuations lands here.14%
