The idea
I believe that if a global shock hits, money will flee small and mid caps and crowd into the handful of giants seen as safe enough to survive it. So this take owns those destinations: defense contractors, big pharma, food and staples giants, energy majors, and mega-cap titans built to catch that fleeing capital. No single name dominates, and I keep a larger cash reserve on hand as dry powder for the panic days. I'd rethink this if years pass without that kind of shock materializing.
What it owns
- A world-mobilizing crisis sends emergency spending to the companies that build the hardware governments depend on first. · Lockheed MartinIt is the largest defense contractor and the first recipient of emergency military spending when governments mobilize against a threat., RTX CorporationIt builds the missiles, radar and detection systems that governments order first when a crisis demands the ability to see and respond to threats., Northrop GrummanIt builds the strategic weapons and surveillance systems governments turn to when the stakes become existential., General DynamicsIt owns the tanks, ships and shipyards that a mobilization needs alongside missiles, providing the ground and sea hardware of the defense response.23%
- The largest balance sheets and most liquid companies become safe harbors when panicked capital flees smaller investments. · AppleIt is one of the most liquid and widely held mega-cap companies, a natural destination when capital flees smaller holdings during a shock., MicrosoftIt provides the cloud and software infrastructure that governments and companies rely on to coordinate a crisis response and cannot turn off., JPMorgan ChaseIt is the largest US bank, the destination where deposits and capital concentrate when deposits and dealmaking flee smaller institutions., AlphabetIt owns the search and communication infrastructure that becomes more essential when information flow matters most during a crisis.18%
- Vaccines, drugs and diagnostics are the first things governments mobilize to buy when health or security threats emerge. · Johnson & JohnsonIt has the broadest scale across medicines and medical supplies, making it the go-to for governments scrambling to respond to a health shock., Abbott LaboratoriesIt dominates the testing and diagnostics capability that the world would scramble for if an outbreak emerged., MerckIt has the proven capacity to manufacture vaccines at scale, the scarce capability panicked capital would seek in a health crisis., PfizerIt already proved it can design and manufacture a response to a global outbreak at pandemic speed, making it the first stop for crisis capital in medicine.18%
- People stockpile essentials and packaged goods regardless of market conditions, concentrating spending into the largest distributors and producers. · CostcoIt is the primary destination where households go to stockpile in bulk when fear of a shock rises., Archer-Daniels-MidlandIt moves and processes a large share of the global grain trade, the pipeline that keeps the world fed during a crisis., WalmartIt is the largest distribution channel of essentials to the broadest population, the default place where purchases concentrate in hard times., General MillsIt makes the shelf-stable packaged food that households hoard when panic and fear of a shock rise.17%
- Any crisis response requires fuel at scale, and the integrated energy majors are the only suppliers large enough to sustain it. · ExxonMobilIt is one of the few companies large enough to supply fuel at the scale a global mobilization would require., ChevronIt is an integrated energy major that pumps, refines and delivers under one roof, capable of sustaining fuel supply during a crisis.11%
