The idea
I like AI compute long term but not the leveraged data center builders and neoclouds who carry all the financing risk on fast-depreciating GPUs while owning none of the models. So I skip them and own four ways to win anyway: edge AI chipmakers as compute moves onto phones and PCs, fortress-balance-sheet companies who could scoop up distressed data centers cheap if the builders crack within a year, suppliers who get paid upfront no matter who ends up owning the facility, and real-revenue energy names since the power bill gets paid regardless.
What it owns
- As AI models run locally on phones and computers instead of in remote data centers, the value shifts to the chips and memory inside devices rather than rented cloud infrastructure. · Apple Inc.It sells the devices most people will run local AI models on and avoids the data center financing risk that affects builders., Qualcomm Inc.It makes the chips that run AI locally on phones and PCs, capturing value from the shift away from cloud-only compute., Arm Holdings plcIt collects royalties on nearly every phone and edge device that runs local AI models, capturing value from the shift without owning hardware that becomes obsolete., Micron Technology Inc.Running AI models locally on devices requires significantly more memory per unit, and it supplies that memory to phones and PCs., Ambarella Inc.It makes chips that run AI vision processing directly on cameras and in cars without needing data centers, a pure play on compute moving to edge devices., Lattice SemiconductorIt makes low-power programmable chips for AI tasks on small devices, capturing value from the shift toward local model execution., Synaptics Inc.It supplies connectivity and sensing chips that edge devices need as they become smarter, with lower cost exposure to the local AI shift than larger competitors.30%
- If leveraged data center builders face financial stress, these cash-rich companies can acquire distressed capacity at steep discounts and integrate it into their existing operations. · Microsoft Corp.It has the cash and the cloud infrastructure to acquire distressed data center capacity if leveraged builders face financial stress, and it owns the models and customer relationships to win either way., Alphabet Inc.It owns the models and has the cash to acquire distressed data center capacity if the credit environment tightens for leveraged builders., Amazon.com Inc.It can absorb distressed data center capacity directly into AWS at a discount if a builder faces financial stress, strengthening its competitive position., Meta Platforms Inc.It funds its compute buildout from its own profits without leverage, so a builder distress event becomes a buying opportunity rather than a threat., Berkshire Hathaway Inc.It holds a massive cash pile that gets deployed when assets become distressed and sell at low prices, and it provides portfolio cushion if builders face stress.25%
- These companies collect payment when their equipment ships, so the financing risk that builders carry does not affect their cash flow or profitability. · NVIDIA Corp.It gets paid upfront for GPUs before builders hold them as inventory, so its cash flow does not depend on the builders' financial stability., Taiwan SemiconductorIt manufactures chips for both edge devices and data center GPUs and gets paid upfront regardless of which company ends up owning the infrastructure., Broadcom Inc.It sells networking and custom AI chips for data centers and gets paid before the builder faces financing risk., Vertiv HoldingsIt supplies power and cooling equipment that data centers need and gets paid upfront, though large project cancellations would affect its order book.18%
- Whoever operates the data centers must pay for power, and massive expansion in compute demand will require significant new energy capacity to be built and operated. · Constellation EnergyIt operates the largest US nuclear fleet with actual current revenue, and whoever owns the data centers will need to pay for power., Vistra Corp.It sells power into markets with rising demand and operates nuclear and gas plants with existing revenue, not speculative projects., GE Vernova Inc.It sells turbines and grid equipment for the energy infrastructure buildout, getting paid for hardware regardless of who places the order., Cameco Corp.It mines uranium fuel for reactors, and if nuclear power supplies the energy for expanding compute, fuel demand grows alongside it.16%
