Outbreak Hedge, Defense First

The idea
I built this as a hedge that works whichever way the suspected plague outbreak in Russia goes. About two-thirds sits in steady defense: gold, long Treasuries, utilities, staples and defensive pharma that hold up in any health scare regardless of how this plays out. The rest leans into outbreak winners, diagnostics, vaccine and antibiotic makers, and biodefense names that gain if containment fails. I kept 10% in cash to add to those winners if there's confirmed escalation, and I'm spreading bets across names rather than betting on one company.
What it owns
- Gold, long-dated bonds, and utilities tend to hold value or rise when fear shifts money away from stocks, regardless of the specific threat. · SPDR Gold SharesGold typically gains when health scares trigger flight to safety, holding value as long as outbreak concerns keep investors nervous., iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETFLong-duration Treasuries are where capital flows during black swan events, as happened when market fear peaked in early pandemic., Utilities Select Sector SPDR FundUtilities generate steady dividend income regardless of outbreak severity, since people pay power bills in any economic condition.24%
- Retailers and manufacturers of groceries, household basics, and disinfectants see steady or increased demand when health concerns drive stockpiling behavior. · Procter & GambleMakes soap, paper goods, and cleaning products that households buy in waves during health scares and continue buying when nothing is wrong., Costco WholesaleBulk retailer where people go to stockpile supplies when worried, with pandemic experience making that buying reflex faster and larger., WalmartSells essentials at lowest prices, maintaining steady traffic in normal times while capturing surge demand if people begin preparing for disruption., CloroxDisinfectant and cleaning product maker saw dramatic sales spikes during the pandemic and would repeat if plague fears spread to households.23%
- Testing is the first purchase governments make when an outbreak threat emerges, as demonstrated during the COVID response. · Abbott LaboratoriesBuilt the rapid diagnostic test that scaled during the pandemic and sits first in line to mass-produce plague testing if containment fails., Thermo Fisher ScientificSupplies laboratory instruments and molecular testing equipment that every large testing surge depends on, a direct multiplier for outbreak diagnostic demand., DanaherMakes diagnostic instruments and consumables that scaled during the pandemic while maintaining a solid recurring business in normal conditions., QuidelOrthoSpecializes in point-of-care diagnostic tests that see direct spikes with outbreak demand, with limited steady-state business outside of crisis periods.15%
- Vaccine platforms, antibiotic manufacturers, and biodefense contractors benefit directly if plague cases spread, since plague is bacterial and treatable with existing tools. · BioNTechmRNA vaccine platform proved capable of moving from viral sequence to clinical shots in months, the exact response pathway likely to activate again., ModernaProven mRNA vaccine responder would be included in any plague vaccine effort following the pandemic playbook, making it a pure escalation bet., Emergent BioSolutionsGovernment stockpile contractor gets called when Washington decides to prepare for biological threats, winning orders if plague fears trigger procurement., Teva Pharmaceutical IndustriesMajor generic antibiotic manufacturer benefits if bacterial plague demand for doxycycline and streptomycin surges, while maintaining value as low-cost producer., SIGA TechnologiesDependent on government biodefense procurement, experiencing demand spikes during biological threats, making confirmed plague outbreak its ideal catalyst.12%
- Large diversified drugmakers with vaccine and antiviral capabilities maintain stable performance in market downturns and sit closest to any treatment response. · Johnson & JohnsonLarge diversified pharmaceutical company with strong defensive characteristics maintains value in downturns while holding vaccine and treatment relevance., Merck & Co.Diversified pharmaceutical company with vaccine and antiviral capabilities sits between defensive safety and outbreak response, offering both income and exposure.12%
- Stay-at-home businesses gain value only if movement restrictions actually return, making this a smaller position tied to escalation rather than outbreak headlines alone. · DoorDashGains order volume when people decide staying home is safer than going out, with an already-profitable model that benefits from behavior shift., Zoom CommunicationsBecomes the reflexive tool for remote work if containment fails and companies send employees home faster based on pandemic experience.4%
