The idea
I believe the ocean becomes a major lever for pulling carbon out of the air, through mineral alkalinity, seabed storage, and coastal habitat restoration. Since most of the pure-play startups are private, I own the public companies they'll depend on: those measuring and verifying ocean carbon, offshore and coastal contractors, and mineral and desalination suppliers, plus a smaller stake in companies that have committed to buying carbon removal.
What it owns
- Monitoring ocean projects and verifying their impact requires sensors, satellites and networks that can reach remote waters where conventional infrastructure does not exist. · Teledyne TechnologiesIt makes ocean sensors, underwater gliders and sonar that measure whether marine carbon projects are working as intended., Iridium CommunicationsIts satellite network carries data from buoys and ocean sensors back to shore, providing the only practical link for remote measurement far from land., Planet LabsIt images the entire planet daily, allowing verification of whether seagrass beds and mangrove restoration are actually expanding as intended., XylemIt makes water quality instruments and treatment systems that profit as coastal waters and ocean areas get measured and monitored at larger scales.28%
- Seabed storage, offshore monitoring, subsea equipment and coastal restoration all require specialized contractors and engineering firms with deep experience working underwater and in harsh marine environments. · Oceaneering InternationalIt operates the underwater robots and subsea services that seabed carbon storage and offshore monitoring require., Tetra TechIt plans coastal restoration, water projects and environmental infrastructure for government clients worldwide., TechnipFMCIt builds subsea equipment and has moved into seabed carbon storage projects alongside its traditional offshore oil and gas work., AECOMIt designs large infrastructure projects including coastal protection and water systems that overlap with habitat restoration and climate adaptation., EquinorIt is a partner in Northern Lights, an early commercial seabed carbon storage project, and has decades of experience injecting gases below the seabed.26%
- Desalination plants and alkalinity enhancement projects both depend on specialized equipment and bulk mineral materials that turn seawater into fresh water or boost the ocean's natural carbon uptake. · Energy RecoveryIts pressure exchangers reduce the cost of seawater desalination, and desalination plants are natural sites for bolting on ocean alkalinity and electrochemical carbon removal., Minerals TechnologiesIt mines and processes the alkaline minerals, mainly calcium carbonate, that ocean alkalinity enhancement projects would need to spread into seawater., Martin Marietta MaterialsIt quarries crushed limestone and aggregates, the bulk materials that ocean alkalinity projects would require by the shipload.21%
- Companies that have committed to buying carbon removal at scale provide the demand and funding that allows ocean-based removal projects to move from pilots to commercial operations. · AlphabetIt is a founding buyer in Frontier, prepaying for carbon removal including ocean-based approaches., ShopifyIt was a founding member of Frontier and has spent real money purchasing carbon removal, including ocean-based approaches., SalesforceIt has publicly committed to buying carbon removal and funding ocean and coastal restoration projects.12%
- Converting wave motion into electricity offers a way to power remote ocean sensors and monitoring equipment without cables or frequent service visits to installations at sea. · Eco Wave PowerIt converts wave motion into electricity using equipment installed on breakwaters, a potential power source for remote ocean sensors., Ocean Power TechnologiesIt makes buoys that generate their own power from waves, useful for running sensors in offshore locations far from shore.4%
