The idea
I believe we're shifting from a knowledge economy, where you get paid for what you know, to a discovery economy, where you get paid for finding what nobody knows yet, and AI is the force multiplier making that shift real. Rather than betting on who discovers next, I own the toolmakers who get paid on every attempt: instrument giants, simulation and AI-for-science software, DNA synthesis and sequencing, lab automation, and physical-science instruments, spread broadly across the toolkit. I'm holding a cash buffer and thinking in years, not quarters.
What it owns
- Measurement hardware is essential infrastructure for discovery across life sciences, materials, and industrial sectors, creating recurring revenue from installed bases regardless of economic cycles. · Thermo Fisher ScientificSells the consumables and instruments that every lab needs, so its order book reflects whether discovery demand is broadening from large pharma to smaller, distributed teams., DanaherMakes the bioprocessing instruments and manufacturing equipment that turn discoveries into testable products, showing whether discovery spending is structural growth or unwinding., Agilent TechnologiesMass spectrometry and chromatography machines confirm what molecules actually are, so every AI-generated candidate still gets measured through hardware like this., Waters CorporationStandard instrument for separating and measuring chemicals, with recurring revenue from service and consumables tied to installed machines and sample throughput., BrukerTop-end NMR and advanced imaging instruments that research labs buy when expanding, paying off if discovery budgets grow at the frontier of science., Mettler-ToledoDominates lab balances and precision weighing, the basic equipment every new research lab buys on day one as the lab population grows., RevvityReagents and screening tools get consumed with every experiment, so revenue scales with experiment volume regardless of which teams or companies run them.34%
- Software that lets researchers test hypotheses in silico before building physical experiments, collapsing the cost and time of discovery attempts. · SchrodingerOffers software that simulates molecular behavior before lab work begins, the purest computational approach to collapsing discovery costs and time., SynopsysCollects recurring fees from every semiconductor design project in a duopoly, and AI is making those projects more numerous and more complex., Cadence Design SystemsSells simulation software behind every new chip design and is expanding the same approach into drugs and materials, earning per design attempt., CertaraSoftware simulates drug behavior in the body before trials, collapsing the cost of failed experiments and helping biotech reduce discovery spending.19%
- DNA writing, reading, and single-cell measurement tools convert computational hypotheses into physical results and generate the data that trains discovery models. · IlluminaReads most of the world's DNA, and if discovery becomes distributed, sequencing volume grows even as price per genome falls with competition., Twist BioscienceManufactures made-to-order DNA as the raw material for engineered-biology experiments, with order volume directly counting discovery attempts., 10x GenomicsSingle-cell measurement tools let researchers see biology at cellular resolution, the kind of granular data that AI models need to improve discovery., Pacific BiosciencesReads DNA in long stretches that catch variants and complexity that short-read sequencing misses, a capability that matters as discovery explores complex genomes., Ginkgo BioworksRuns experiments for customers on a contract basis, the purest version of getting paid per discovery attempt, and needs paying customers to grow before cash depletes.16%
- Discovery spans materials and hardware, not just biology, and these test benches turn research concepts into working prototypes and validated designs. · Keysight TechnologiesSupplies the electronic test gear that every new device and chip must pass through, earning per attempt as hardware complexity and R&D spending rise., Teledyne TechnologiesSensors and scientific cameras are the measurement eyes of discovery, from space imaging to industrial research, growing with government and industrial R&D budgets., FortiveTest, measurement, and calibration tools across industries turn discoveries into working products, anchored by steady recurring revenue from industrial capital spending.13%
- Robots and sample handling let small teams run experiments at the scale and speed that once required large institutions, multiplying output per researcher. · AzentaAutomates sample storage and movement with robots, the infrastructure that lets small teams run high-throughput experiments with limited staff., TeradyneAutomated test equipment and collaborative robot arms handle physical testing and lab work, winning as demand for robotics spreads beyond factories into research.9%
