The idea
My belief is that AI is about to let tiny marketing teams do what used to take dozens of people, so creative costs collapse and the savings flow straight into ad spend. If content becomes infinite while attention stays flat, the real scarcity shifts to distribution, so I want to own the auctions and the picks-and-shovels around them rather than the agencies and old creative tools that get squeezed out.
What it owns
- As marketing budgets shift from salaries to ad spend, the platforms that host auctions capture the redirected money through higher bids per impression. · Meta PlatformsIf lean teams shift spending from salaries to ads, Meta's auctions capture most of that money first, and rising bids per impression flow directly to revenue., AlphabetSearch and YouTube auctions receive redirected marketing dollars, especially when abundant content makes distribution the scarce resource., AppLovinIts AI engine decides which ad wins each auction, capturing the margin that agencies once earned, and must grow ad revenue faster than the largest platforms., AmazonRetail media auctions at the moment of purchase are exactly where SMBs bid as creative costs drop, and the ad business must grow faster than retail., RedditIts auctions remain cheaper per impression than larger competitors, and if bids rise everywhere, the cheapest auctions rise fastest in percentage terms., PinterestIt is a shopping feed where small brands with AI-made creative compete equally, catching redirected SMB ad dollars, and needs rising ad pricing and SMB advertiser growth.39%
- Software that lets small teams run what once required much larger workforces, with AI features landing here first as creative costs collapse. · ShopifySmall teams run their entire business on Shopify and use its AI tools to operate lean, so the take depends on SMB growth and marketing spend staying robust., KlaviyoIt automates campaigns that lean teams no longer have people to run by hand, so it wins directly when headcount shrinks and SMB customer count rises., HubSpotIt is the suite small teams use to do what much larger teams once handled, and must prove AI features increase price per seat rather than reduce seats needed., Wix.comIt builds sites and creative with AI, embodying the collapse of creative costs described in the take, and must attract paying SMBs faster than free AI tools undercut it., BrazeIt delivers the messages that lean teams and AI systems generate at high volume, so growth in message throughput directly drives its business.24%
- Generating vastly more content requires chips and cloud capacity regardless of which AI tool wins, making infrastructure providers essential to the take. · NVIDIAEvery piece of generated content runs on GPUs, and NVIDIA supplies most of them, so content generation demand must outpace supply for this position to work., Taiwan SemiconductorWhoever wins the AI chip race, TSMC manufactures the advanced chips needed to generate content at scale, making it infrastructure toll booth for this take., BroadcomIt builds custom chips hyperscalers use to generate and serve AI content more cheaply, making content at scale economically feasible, so custom silicon orders must keep rising., MicrosoftMost AI marketing tools rent compute from its cloud, so it collects revenue from the entire suite era whoever builds the applications on top.21%
- When all creative looks polished, targeting, bidding efficiency, and content verification determine which ads win auctions and prove their placement. · The Trade DeskIt runs bidding on the open internet, deciding which ad wins when all look equally polished, and must keep taking share outside walled gardens or the take breaks., DoubleVerifyA market filled with AI-generated content needs verification of what is real and where ads actually ran, and it gets paid per impression checked., Zeta GlobalWhen every ad looks equally good, targeting data decides auction winners, and it sells that targeting edge by growing AI-driven revenue, not just through acquisition.7%
