The idea
I believe personal AI agents are about to automate the tedious work of shopping around, renegotiating bills, re-quoting insurance, comparing grocery prices, ending the quiet advantage many companies have from customer inertia. I'm playing this two ways: owning the payment rails and checkout infrastructure that get paid regardless of which agent wins, and owning the lowest-cost providers in retail, insurance, and telecom that gain share once agents always pick the cheapest option.
What it owns
- Every transaction an agent completes still flows through payment infrastructure, which collects a fee regardless of which agent platform wins. · MastercardIt collects a transaction fee on every agent-completed purchase and provides the payment tools agents use at checkout., VisaIt operates the credential system and payment rails that settle agent transactions, earning a fee on every purchase regardless of which agent platform wins., ShopifyIt wires its merchants for agent-compatible checkout, positioning Shopify stores to convert agent traffic rather than lose it to competitors., PayPalIt aims to be the credential wallet that agents hold and act through when completing purchases across merchants., AffirmIt offers installment financing at the moment an agent finds the best price, embedding itself at checkout when agents optimize payment options., CloudflareIt sits at the gate between merchant sites and automated traffic, earning fees to verify and admit agent activity instead of blocking it wholesale.33%
- When agents price-match staples and groceries at scale, the lowest-cost retailers accumulate the volume from those comparisons. · WalmartIts everyday low price formula becomes the default answer when agents price-match baskets and route spending to the lowest total cost., CostcoIts model caps margins so prices sit near the floor agents discover, capturing share when price-driven shopping routes more spending to the lowest-cost option., Dollar GeneralIt wins when price is the only question agents ask, capturing share by staying cheapest on everyday items agents compare and select., Grocery OutletIt buys surplus inventory cheap and sells it cheap, creating deals that agents identify and route shoppers toward at scale.21%
- Insurance renewal attracts agent re-quoting, and the insurer built to win on direct price takes the share at each renewal cycle. · ProgressiveIt quotes insurance direct and competes on price, positioning it to capture share when agents re-quote at every renewal., LemonadeIt quotes and binds policies through software with no human required, making it the easiest insurer for agents to shop and purchase from at scale., Root IncIt prices auto insurance by algorithm and returns quotes to machines instantly, positioning itself for profitable growth when agents re-quote at renewal.14%
- When agents renegotiate phone bills monthly, the cheapest carrier among major providers captures that recurring spend. · T-Mobile USIt competes as the price leader among major carriers, which agents select when renegotiating phone bills monthly., Charter CommunicationsIts mobile bundle undercuts major carriers on price, which agents select when automatically renegotiating phone bills.12%
- Marketplaces with open inventory and pricing data become the layer agents use to compare and purchase across many merchants. · Booking HoldingsIt aggregates travel inventory in one place, positioning itself as the platform agents use to compare and complete bookings instead of searching direct., eBayIt remains open enough for agents to crawl, compare, and transact on, positioning itself to capture volume when closed platforms wall agents out., Instacart (Maplebear)It holds the item-level price data across grocers that agents need to compare baskets, and collects a fee on orders regardless of agent platform.10%
