The idea
I think Starship's falling launch costs push AI compute and solar power into orbit, and SpaceX, with xAI and Starlink under its roof, captures most of that shift. SPCX is my core position, sized at a cap rather than left to run unbounded, surrounded by the chipmakers that supply orbital compute, the radiation-hardened parts that let hardware survive up there, and the smaller launch and space-infrastructure names that benefit as orbit gets cheaper. I keep a cash reserve to add on swings and treat this as a multi-year bet rather than a quick trade.
What it owns
- As computing shifts into orbit, the chip designers and manufacturers that power AI systems on Earth will supply the same demand in space. · NVIDIA CorporationIt makes the AI chips that power data centers on Earth and would supply the same chips to orbital computing platforms., Broadcom Inc.It designs custom AI and networking chips for the largest data center builders who would operate platforms in space., Micron Technology, Inc.It manufactures high-end memory chips that every orbital AI computer would require in large quantities., Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing CompanyIt manufactures the most advanced chips used by AI designers in this take, so it captures value across multiple chip suppliers., Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.It designs AI chips that could serve as an alternative supplier to orbital computing platforms seeking multiple semiconductor sources.26%
- SpaceX operates the only reusable orbital rocket system in active service, which lowers launch costs and enables frequent access to space for satellites, cargo and people. · Space Exploration Technologies Corp.It develops Starship for frequent, low-cost launches and operates Starlink while holding stakes in orbital AI infrastructure.24%
- Lower launch costs expand what can be deployed to orbit, growing the total addressable market for space-based hardware and services. · Rocket Lab USA, Inc.It builds launch vehicles, satellites and space solar panels that benefit directly as launch costs fall and orbital infrastructure expands., Redwire CorporationIt manufactures solar arrays and in-space manufacturing equipment that orbital compute infrastructure would depend on., Planet Labs PBCIt operates a large imaging satellite constellation and partners on orbital AI projects, gaining from lower launch costs., AST SpaceMobile, Inc.It is building a satellite-to-phone network that requires frequent launches and competes with space-based mobile services., Intuitive Machines, Inc.It lands hardware on the moon and provides lunar communications infrastructure, extending the space economy beyond Earth orbit., Firefly Aerospace Inc.It builds rockets and moon landers that enable wider deployment of hardware and computing systems across the lunar economy.24%
- Orbital compute needs specialized electronics that survive radiation, optical components for data links, and power systems designed for the space environment. · Lumentum Holdings Inc.It makes optical components for laser links between satellites and orbital data centers, a critical piece of space-based computing architecture., Eaton Corporation plcIt supplies power systems and electrical equipment for data centers and launch facilities supporting the growing space economy., Mercury Systems, Inc.It builds radiation-hardened computing hardware designed to survive the harsh orbital environment where data centers would operate., AXT, Inc.It produces specialty semiconductor wafers used in space solar cells and optical components essential to orbital infrastructure., Vicor CorporationIt makes compact power converters that feed AI chips, solving the constraint of fitting power systems into space-based hardware.16%
