The idea
I think attention spans and independent thinking are in slow, decade-long decline, and money flows to whoever profits from that. So this basket owns the dealers shrinking our attention (feeds, streaming, betting, autoplay), the crutches we lean on as we outsource thinking (AI and the compute behind it), and the impulse monetizers cashing in on it. A vice layer that has survived every literacy era adds ballast, no single name dominates, and I keep a small cash reserve to add on dips. I would rethink it if people started reading more, not less.
What it owns
- The feeds, autoplay screens and ad engines that profit directly as attention spans shrink. · Meta PlatformsIt owns the infinite feed where shrinking attention goes to die, profiting as time spent on Instagram and Facebook grows., NetflixIt built autoplay into the default so viewers never have to decide, monetizing the passivity of continuous watching., AppLovinIt operates the toll booth on mobile game and app ads, capturing revenue every time an impulsive scroll becomes a tap., RedditIt turns arguing with strangers into hours of scrolling and serves as raw material for AI training, touching both sides of the take., SpotifyIt is the soundtrack to not paying attention, filling every quiet moment with music, podcasts and audiobooks., RokuIt is the default screen always on in the background, selling ads against hours of passive viewing.31%
- As people hand their thinking to AI, the assistants and the chips they run on collect the toll. · MicrosoftIt puts Copilot into every document and inbox, selling the thinking aid directly to the workforce outsourcing their cognition., NVIDIAEvery outsourced thought runs on its chips, making it the infrastructure bet underneath the AI crutch., AlphabetIt controls the dominant search platform, so its ability to monetize AI-generated answers determines whether it benefits from or falls victim to the shift away from traditional link browsing., PalantirIt sells decisions as a service to institutions that would rather not reason through them themselves, the enterprise version of outsourced thinking.25%
- Betting apps, buy-now-pay-later and dopamine drinks make more money the less their customers stop to think. · DraftKingsIt profits directly from rising impulsivity, taking a cut every time a parlay gets placed during the game., Flutter EntertainmentIt owns FanDuel and runs betting globally, profiting each time impulsive decisions turn into placed bets., AffirmIt monetizes the gap between wanting and affording by turning impulsivity into a credit product., Monster BeverageIt sells the legal dopamine hit that keeps scrolling going, with energy drinks taking shelf space from traditional caffeine., DoorDashIt gets paid every time a craving beats the will to cook, monetizing impulsivity applied to dinner., Celsius HoldingsIt is the faster-growing energy drink targeted at younger drinkers, needing sustained above-category growth to justify its premium.25%
- Steady nicotine and casino cash flows that have never depended on a thoughtful customer. · Las Vegas SandsIt runs the oldest impulse trade there is, the casino floor concentrated in Macau and Singapore., AltriaIt survives every shift in literacy and attention through pricing power in nicotine, paying out steadily while time plays out., Philip Morris InternationalIt is the vice stock actually growing, spreading the nicotine habit to new users through Zyn pouches.12%
