The idea
I believe autonomous vehicles and robots will steadily take over transportation and logistics work over the next decade, and the value of that displaced labor will flow to whoever sells or deploys the autonomy. So I own both layers: the visible deployers capturing labor savings directly, and the quieter suppliers of chips, sensors, and robot components that get paid no matter who wins. I keep a small cash reserve to add on weakness, hold broadly across five sub-themes rather than betting on one name, and plan to stay in for years since this is a structural shift, not a trade.
What it owns
- These companies operate driverless services or vehicles on public roads and capture the labor cost savings most directly as autonomous systems replace human drivers. · AlphabetIt owns Waymo, the most operational driverless service running today, with core ad business funding indefinite development as paid rides expand to new cities., TeslaIt operates both a robotaxi network and Optimus humanoid robots, positioning it to capture labor savings directly if autonomous deployment and vehicle improvements continue scaling., Uber TechnologiesIt owns rider demand and can integrate robotaxis from multiple partners into its platform, cutting driver costs to near zero as autonomous vehicles become available., Aurora InnovationIt focuses on long-haul trucking automation where highways offer the easiest miles to automate and driver wages represent the largest cost savings opportunity., Pony AIIt operates robotaxis in China where regulators move faster on autonomous permits, with success dependent on expanding city licenses and growing paid driverless rides.26%
- Autonomous vehicles and robots require massive amounts of training compute, and these companies supply the chips and infrastructure regardless of which deployment platform succeeds. · NvidiaIt supplies the majority of training compute that self-driving systems and humanoid robots depend on, collecting revenue regardless of which autonomous platform wins., Taiwan SemiconductorIt manufactures nearly every chip used in autonomous systems, collecting revenue at the production stage regardless of which chip designer or platform succeeds., QualcommIts automotive chips power driver assistance and autonomous systems across multiple carmakers, generating revenue that grows as design wins and autonomous content per vehicle increase., Advanced Micro DevicesIt supplies processors for AI training workloads where customers need an alternative to their primary vendor, making it a beneficiary of the autonomy computing buildout.24%
- Robots are already replacing human workers at scale in warehouses and factories, extending labor displacement beyond driving into logistics and manufacturing. · AmazonIt deploys more warehouse robots than any company on earth and captures cost savings directly in its logistics network while AWS sells the underlying compute layer., Rockwell AutomationIt provides the automation systems that factories use to replace human labor on production lines, capturing the industrial half of workplace displacement., TeradyneIt owns Universal Robots, the leader in collaborative robot arms that enable automation in small and mid-size factories as manufacturers adopt labor-replacing technology., SymboticIt automates entire warehouses for major retailers, directly replacing warehouse labor through installed systems that convert its backlog into profitable operations., Zebra TechnologiesIt provides the scanners and tracking software that make warehouses machine-readable, enabling robots to function effectively as automation systems scale.22%
- Cameras, lidar, and perception software form the sensory layer of every autonomous system, a supplier position paid per vehicle regardless of which brand deploys it. · MobileyeIt supplies perception systems and autonomous driving software to dozens of carmakers, providing exposure to the entire industry's autonomous shift without depending on a single brand., SynopsysIt provides the design software that every autonomy chip uses regardless of manufacturer, collecting revenue at the design stage before any autonomous system ships., AptivIt supplies the wiring, sensors, and software architecture connecting autonomous systems in vehicles, capturing higher value per car as autonomy demands more sensors and compute., OusterIt manufactures lidar sensors that autonomous vehicles and robots depend on, with success tied to lidar becoming standard equipment across the industry.13%
- Freight networks adopt autonomous technology earliest because driver wages represent their largest cost, allowing them to capture the savings directly. · Old Dominion Freight LineIt is positioned as the best-operated trucking network to adopt autonomous trucks first and extract maximum savings when driverless technology becomes available., J.B. Hunt TransportIt is positioned as an early adopter of autonomous trucking, able to capture driver cost savings directly as driverless freight technology proves viable on its routes., United Parcel ServiceIt invests heavily in automated sorting hubs and delivery automation, with labor cost savings flowing directly to profit as automation expands faster than labor cost inflation.10%
