Small Shops Go Digital

The idea
I think small businesses are about to hand daily tasks and performance tracking to AI assistants, while their old paper vouchers and gift cards turn into digital, brand-specific credits people buy, earn, trade and redeem. Since nothing public does the whole thing yet, I own it in layers: the software and payment platforms already sitting on SMB data, the AI makers behind the assistants, deal and rewards apps, and the digital-dollar rails vouchers would run on, with cash held aside.
What it owns
- Small businesses already run their operations on this software, making it the natural home for AI assistants that can read data and handle tasks. · ShopifyShopify operates the online stores for many merchants and already handles gift cards and discount codes, making it a natural platform for digital vouchers and AI tools., IntuitQuickBooks serves a large share of small-business bookkeeping, and Intuit is building an AI assistant within it to automate tasks and analyze finances., ToastToast operates checkout, gift cards and loyalty for restaurants, so digital restaurant vouchers would naturally flow through its system., HubSpotHubSpot sells customer and marketing software to small and mid-size companies with AI agents that handle follow-ups and reporting tasks.29%
- Branded digital vouchers and tokenized credits need infrastructure to move between people and settle payments, which these companies are building. · PayPalPayPal's PYUSD digital dollar and widespread use in online checkout make it a transport layer for vouchers moving between people and merchants., CoinbaseCoinbase builds blockchain infrastructure like its Base network where brand coins and digital vouchers could move between users and settle payments., Circle Internet GroupCircle issues USDC, a digital dollar that businesses can settle payments in and that brand vouchers could be priced against., RobinhoodRobinhood is building tokenized ownership of securities, representing the infrastructure for where legally permitted, tokenized ownership of small businesses.19%
- Small businesses will rely on AI assistants built on these companies' cloud platforms and AI models to run operations and serve customers. · MicrosoftCopilot embedded in Office tools reaches small businesses already running on Microsoft, positioning it as the AI assistant that can manage operations and reports., AlphabetGemini, Google's local search and advertising reach the shops and deal-hungry shoppers who would buy and trade digital vouchers., AmazonAWS provides the cloud foundation for many small-business apps and blockchain services, while Amazon helps its sellers with AI-powered listings and store management.17%
- These companies operate the checkout and loyalty systems where digital vouchers and prepaid credits are sold and redeemed at the register. · BlockBlock's Square platform sells gift cards and loyalty programs to local shops and sits at the point where these digital rewards get redeemed., FiservClover operates checkout systems in many small shops and restaurants, so any digital voucher replacing paper ones must work at its registers., Shift4 PaymentsShift4 processes payments at restaurants, hotels and retailers, positioning it at the moment when customers redeem digital vouchers and rewards.16%
- These platforms connect deal-seeking shoppers with brands, and the prepaid loyalty credit model keeps customers returning. · StarbucksStarbucks demonstrates the prepaid loyalty model where customers load money onto a branded card and app, earning rewards only redeemable with the brand., IbottaIbotta runs a digital offers network giving shoppers cash back, connecting deal-hungry customers with brands paying for placement., GrouponGroupon sells discount vouchers for local restaurants and services, embodying the paper voucher system expected to go digital and tradable.11%
