The idea
I believe a growing share of discretionary spending shifts toward organic and clean-label food over the next decade, and the real winners are cult brands people seek out by name, not the generic organics private label can copy. So the portfolio leans into those cult brands as the core, backed by the ingredient and supply companies they all depend on, plus large-cap better-for-you names, retailers, and clean-eating restaurant chains as ballast. I keep 8% in cash to add to the cult names whenever they sell off, and I'm treating this as a slow, structural, multi-year hold rather than a trade.
What it owns
- Brands with strong customer loyalty capture the organic price premium directly and are hardest for store brands to replicate. · Vital FarmsIt commands a price premium on eggs because shoppers trust the brand, and holds that position as long as volume grows and price holds against cheaper pasture-raised knockoffs stocked nearby., FreshpetIt owns the refrigerated pet food case, a moat private label cannot easily copy because it requires in-store fridges and a cold supply chain maintained as household penetration grows., BellRing BrandsPremier Protein is the shake people ask for by name., Simply Good FoodsQuest and Atkins command brand loyalty in low-sugar snacks, allowing premium pricing over store-brand alternatives., Vita Coco CompanyIt is basically coconut water to most shoppers, the kind of category ownership that is hard for private label to clone, holding its majority share as grocers push their own versions., Celsius HoldingsIt turned sugar-free energy into a lifestyle brand people seek out, the drink version of the cult-brand bet, and works while sales keep growing and distribution through major partners expands.34%
- Every organic brand needs certified ingredients and clean-label inputs, and suppliers get paid regardless of which brand wins. · IngredionIt supplies the clean and natural ingredients that brands use when they swap out artificial additives, earning revenue regardless of which brand wins the category., Darling IngredientsIt turns food waste into ingredients and renewable fuel, answering shoppers who care where food comes from, and works if demand for sustainable ingredients keeps fat margins and renewable diesel prices cooperate., International Flavors & FragrancesIt makes the natural flavors that let clean-label food taste good, getting paid whichever brand wins as long as natural and health-focused ingredients keep growing in its mix., Cal-Maine FoodsSpecialty eggs are growing as a share of Cal-Maine's sales as retailers commit to cage-free and organic capacity.16%
- Large food companies with strong organic and natural lines provide steady anchors for a long-term hold. · McCormickMcCormick holds pricing power on spices and seasonings as home cooking remains a channel for cleaner eating., General MillsIt owns Annie's and other natural brands as its way to capture the clean-eating shift, and only needs the natural portfolio to grow faster than the legacy cereal business shrinks., Hormel FoodsIt owns Applegate, the natural and organic meat brand shoppers seek in the deli case, and needs that clean brand to grow while the core business stays stable enough not to drag.15%
- Grocers and distributors focused on natural food grow with the whole category, cushioning the bet on any single brand. · Sprouts Farmers MarketSprouts captures spending when discretionary dollars flow toward clean food., Costco WholesaleIt sells significant volumes of organic food including the cult brands in this take, making it the safest way to own shelf space as long as membership renewals and food sales stay strong., United Natural FoodsIt moves organic and natural brands to grocery shelves nationwide on thin margins, and needs natural food volumes growing and margins improving while managing its customer concentration risk.14%
- Restaurant chains built on fresh, premium food show how the same spending shift appears when people eat out. · Chipotle Mexican GrillChipotle proved clean eating scales to thousands of locations and that consumers pay premiums for it., CAVA GroupIt applies Chipotle's playbook to Mediterranean food, riding the same clean-eating demand as long as new stores open on schedule and existing stores keep growing sales., SweetgreenSweetgreen is a salad brand with strong consumer attachment, and the take requires a clear path to improving restaurant margins and shrinking losses.12%
