Bracing for the Break

The idea
I think policy chaos, inflation damage, and Iran risk tip markets into a real downturn within the next year, even though the AI story underneath is genuine. So this basket leans heavy on gold and inflation-protected bonds, adds energy producers that benefit if Middle East tensions spike oil, keeps a solid base of defensive stalwarts people buy in any economy, and holds a smaller slice of the most durable AI names to stay in that story through the drop. I'm also holding 15% in cash to buy more once the break actually happens.
What it owns
- People buy groceries, medicine and electricity in any economy, so these hold up best in a downturn. · Procter & GambleShoppers buy toothpaste and detergent regardless of economic conditions, and the brand pricing power insulates earnings from trading-down pressure., WalmartIt is where consumers trade down when inflation squeezes households, so it can gain customers as the economy weakens., Utilities Select Sector SPDRIt owns utilities whose bills get paid in any economy, and electricity demand is rising as data centers expand., Costco WholesaleIt runs a membership model where fees keep cash coming in regardless of the economy, and shoppers trade down to it when inflation pinches., Johnson & JohnsonHealthcare spending follows medical need rather than economic conditions, providing earnings stability and lower volatility during market breaks., Berkshire HathawayIt sits on a massive cash pile that can buy assets cheaply in a market downturn, and it tends to fall less when stocks break.29%
- Gold and inflation-protected bonds tend to gain when inflation damage and policy chaos hit stocks. · SPDR Gold SharesIt tracks gold prices, which tend to rise when inflation damage builds and trust in policy weakens., iShares TIPS Bond ETFIt holds Treasury bonds whose payouts rise automatically with inflation, so it pays off directly if inflation stays elevated., Newmont CorporationIt is the largest gold miner, so its profits climb faster than gold itself when the metal rises on inflation and instability., Franco-NevadaIt collects royalties on gold production without operating mines, so it gets gold upside with less operational risk.24%
- The AI revolution is expected to be real, so a small slice owns the winners likely to hold through a market decline. · MicrosoftRecurring software revenue and a strong balance sheet position it to benefit from AI adoption through Azure, even as business spending slows elsewhere., NVIDIAIts chips are the infrastructure layer for the AI buildout, creating demand that can persist through economic weakness if capital spending priorities remain intact., Taiwan SemiconductorIt manufactures nearly every advanced AI chip, making it the bottleneck the whole AI revolution depends on., AlphabetIt is the cheapest of the major AI companies by valuation, and its search business generates cash flow that acts as a floor in a downturn.18%
- If conflict with Iran flares, oil spikes and these producers earn more while most stocks fall. · Exxon MobilIt earns more on every barrel when oil prices rise, so Middle East conflict would lift profits while broader stocks fall., ConocoPhillipsIt is a pure oil producer, so its profits move almost directly with crude prices and would surge if Middle East conflict spikes energy., Energy Select Sector SPDRIt owns the whole US energy sector, so it captures the upside from an oil shock without betting on any single company.14%
