The idea
I believe AI is letting individual experts and tiny teams run businesses that used to need whole organizations, and the real money flows to the stack underneath them, not the solo operators themselves. So this basket owns the rails: payment and storefront platforms, developer and API infrastructure, the AI tools that provide leverage, the distribution platforms where these businesses find customers, and the compute underneath it all.
What it owns
- Companies that take a cut when solo businesses sell something, invoice a client, or manage their books. · ShopifySolo sellers open their first storefront on Shopify, and its AI tools let a single owner build and run the whole operation., IntuitSolo operators still need books, taxes, and invoices, which QuickBooks and TurboTax deliver to small-business customers., BlockIt gets paid when tiny businesses accept money through Square for sellers and Cash App on the buyer side., PayPalSolo businesses sell globally from day one, and it is how a creator in one country gets paid by a customer in another., EtsyIndependent makers, the original one-person companies, find buyers here, as long as it stays a marketplace for distinctive sellers rather than generic goods.26%
- Platforms that one-person software shops rent instead of hiring an engineering team for networking, messaging, databases, and hosting. · CloudflareIts Workers platform lets one developer ship a global app without needing an operations team, the core idea of this take in miniature., MongoDBMongoDB Atlas is the database a tiny team rents instead of hiring a database admin, especially as AI apps generate new databases., TwilioInstead of hiring support and messaging teams, solo operators call its API to text, call, and verify customers., DigitalOceanIt is the cloud built for solo developers and five-person shops that find larger clouds overwhelming, offering simple and cheap compute plus GPUs., GitLabIt sells the whole software pipeline in one tool, so one person can build, test, and ship what used to need a team.21%
- Tools that multiply what one expert can do across coding, design, and marketing work that once required a full department. · MicrosoftIt owns GitHub and Copilot, letting one developer do the work of several, plus Azure underneath as the large-cap ballast of the AI leverage layer., HubSpotIt lets a founder run marketing, sales, and support without hiring any of those departments, if its AI features keep pulling in small businesses., FigmaIt is how a non-designer ships something professionally designed, and its AI features push that further for solo builders., AdobeIts Firefly and Creative Cloud let one creator produce output that used to need a studio, if it converts more users to paying creators.18%
- Platforms where solo businesses buy customers and build audiences because they have no sales force of their own. · Meta PlatformsOne-person businesses buy customers through Instagram and Facebook ads, and its AI tools mean they don't need an agency., AlphabetIt owns YouTube where individual creators build audiences and search where solo businesses get found, plus Google Cloud underneath., RedditSolo businesses win by owning a niche, and niches live here, if it keeps growing ad revenue from small advertisers and licensing its content.15%
- The cloud and AI compute providers that every layer above runs on, collecting steady tolls across the entire stack. · NvidiaEvery AI tool in this take runs on Nvidia chips, making it the toll collector regardless of which application layer wins out., AmazonAWS is the landlord under a huge share of the software solo builders rent instead of build, plus Amazon's marketplace sells their goods.13%
