The idea
I believe driverless cars take over most cab rides within the next 3 to 4 years, and as rides get cheaper, total trip volume explodes rather than shrinks, so the whole stack benefits. I spread this across four layers: fleet operators actually running robotaxis, ride platforms that earn on every trip regardless of who drives, the chips and sensors every autonomous vehicle needs, and the charging and fleet management economy that scales with more cars on the road. No single name dominates, and I keep a cash buffer while this plays out over years.
What it owns
- These companies run the actual driverless fleets, so they win directly as robotaxis replace human-driven cabs. · AlphabetIt owns Waymo, which already operates driverless rides across multiple US cities and represents the clearest proof the shift is underway., TeslaIt is positioned as the largest single bet that one company can operate its own robotaxi fleet at scale with the Cybercab already in production., Pony AIIt is a pure robotaxi company, the most direct expression of belief that driverless rides become the majority of urban trips., Aurora InnovationIt applies driverless technology to trucking, where removing the driver makes long hauls cheaper and more frequent., BaiduIt operates Apollo Go, one of the largest robotaxi services in China, where the driverless ride transition may happen fastest., AmazonIt owns Zoox, a purpose-built robotaxi, and also benefits if cheaper driverless vehicles reduce its delivery logistics costs., WeRideIt is rolling out robotaxis across multiple countries, testing whether the shift toward driverless rides is truly global.36%
- Every robotaxi needs computers, cameras and lidar, so these suppliers sell more as fleets grow regardless of who operates them. · NVIDIAIt sells the computing brains that most autonomous vehicles train on and run, so every new robotaxi built generates a sale., MobileyeIt supplies complete autonomy systems to carmakers who don't build their own, winning if the robotaxi shift pulls the auto industry toward self-driving., Hesai GroupIt ships more lidar sensors than any competitor, and most robotaxis outside Tesla carry multiple lidars each., QualcommIts Snapdragon Ride chips power self-driving compute as a second major supplier, providing a hedge across the autonomous vehicle industry., AmbarellaIt makes the vision chips that let autonomous cars see, a small company where the robotaxi fleet volume explosion would matter significantly., OusterIt is the US-based lidar maker, positioned to benefit if American robotaxi fleets require domestic sensors for regulatory or supply reasons., onsemiIt makes the image sensors that feed every camera on an autonomous car, and robotaxis carry far more cameras than standard vehicles.30%
- The apps people hail rides from collect a fee on every trip, and cheaper rides mean more total trips through the platform. · Uber TechnologiesThe platform collects fees on every trip no matter which robotaxi operator provides the ride, and cheaper fares drive higher trip volumes through its app., LyftIt operates a ride platform that partners with autonomous vehicle companies to place their cars on its network and grow ride volume as prices fall., Grab HoldingsIt is the ride platform for Southeast Asia and collects fees on every trip if cheap driverless rides reach its markets.17%
- Thousands of driverless cars need charging and fleet upkeep, a quieter way to earn from the same growth. · Avis Budget GroupIt already runs fleet cleaning, storage, repair and positioning for human-driven vehicles and has partnered with robotaxi operators on fleet management work., EVgoRobotaxi fleets are mostly electric and run far more miles daily than private cars, requiring constant fast charging infrastructure.7%
