Agents Get Write Access

The idea
I believe AI agents will soon do more than read bank transactions, they'll negotiate, switch providers, and move money on our behalf, and that write access ends consumer inertia once it's built. Since nobody knows which door it comes through, I own the layers that get paid regardless: card networks piloting agent payments, the identity and fraud checks every transaction must clear, the core banking software agents will interface with, the platforms building the agents, and programmable money as the alternate rail.
What it owns
- Card networks and processors are already building tokenized credentials that let an agent spend within rules, positioning them to capture transaction fees on agent commerce the way they did on cards. · VisaAlready shipping tokenized frameworks so an agent can pay on behalf of a customer, and most agent transactions are likely to stay on card networks rather than route around them., MastercardAgent Pay is a direct product bet that write access comes through card rails, and Mastercard needs to keep landing agent-payment partnerships and maintain per-transaction network fees through the shift., PayPalAlready holds permission to move consumer money, so if agents plug into existing wallets instead of building new rails, PayPal captures transaction value., American ExpressOwns both sides of its transactions and can set agent rules end to end without waiting on partners, betting that a closed loop moves faster on agent write access.30%
- The largest consumer and enterprise platforms are shipping agent products directly, giving them the distribution to put agent software in front of billions of users and thousands of institutions. · AlphabetHas the most direct path to putting a consumer agent in front of billions of people, betting that agent software comes from the platforms users already trust rather than from startups., MicrosoftIs the channel through which OpenAI's agents reach enterprises including banks and payment companies, getting paid in most scenarios regardless of which rails agents ultimately use., SalesforceIs selling Agentforce directly into banks and financial firms, meaning the institutions agents will transact with are building their own agents on Salesforce.20%
- Every agent transaction needs to prove authorization and screen for fraud, creating a new market for identity verification and risk decisioning that sits between the agent and the money. · OktaBuilds the identity layer that proves an agent is really acting for a customer before it can move money, holding if agent identity becomes a purchased product rather than something each platform builds itself., Fair IsaacAlready sits inside the fraud-scoring flow at most US lenders, and an agent with infinite patience probing accounts creates urgent demand for fraud decisioning on every transaction., EquifaxSells identity and credit verification that agents will need to negotiate and switch on a customer's behalf, holding if verification stays a paid checkpoint rather than getting disintermediated by open banking.15%
- Agents have to connect to bank systems through software, and specialized vendors run the digital layer for thousands of US banks and credit unions that will need upgrades to expose agent-friendly interfaces. · Q2 HoldingsIt builds the digital layer where bank customers and their agents interact with accounts, so pipeline bookings will show whether banks are racing to expose agent-friendly interfaces., Jack Henry & AssociatesRuns core systems at thousands of small banks that will need upgrades to answer requests from agents, betting that community banks modernize rather than lose deposits to those who do., Alkami TechnologyIs the faster-growing version of the same bank-side bet, letting credit unions modernize digital banking so agents have systems to connect to during a multi-year build-out., nCinoRuns workflows inside banks for lending and onboarding that agents will trigger once they can act instead of just read, betting that agent demand forces banks to automate these flows.15%
- If agents route around traditional card rails, stablecoins and crypto infrastructure become the most likely settlement layer, offering instant execution and programmable logic that cards cannot match. · CoinbaseIs the on-ramp and infrastructure if agents route around cards entirely and settle in stablecoins and programmable money, serving as a smaller asymmetric hedge around the card network anchors., Circle Internet GroupIssues a regulated stablecoin that is programmable, instant, and has no card network in the loop, making it the most agent-native money if agents pick the cheapest settlement rail., SoFi TechnologiesIs built to win rate-shoppers, so when agents with infinite patience can move deposits to whoever pays the best rate, consumer inertia stops protecting the biggest banks.13%
