The Abandoned 500

The idea
I believe the index high is hiding a split market: plenty of quality S&P 500 names sit 30% or more below their highs on fears I think are overdone, from AI disrupting software to a medtech growth reset to tired consumer brands and a housing slump. This basket spreads across those five pockets of pessimism, favors businesses with real franchises, and adds an equal-weight S&P 500 fund as ballast that gains if the average stock closes the gap with the giants. I keep a slice in cash and avoid concentrated single-name bets, planning to hold for a couple of years while the catch-up plays out.
What it owns
- Software sold on AI fear · Salesforce, Inc.It is where most large companies keep their customer and sales records, and that data is essential to any AI sales tool that needs to plug into a customer database., ServiceNow, Inc.It runs the workflow software big companies use for IT, HR and customer service, and was sold on the idea that AI agents replace it., Intuit Inc.It owns TurboTax and QuickBooks and was sold on fear that AI will do people's taxes and books for them, though it is buying into revenue management software to push its own AI further., Adobe Inc.It makes Photoshop, Premiere and the creative suite, and was sold on fear that AI image and video tools make it unnecessary.23%
- Device and animal health leaders were punished for slower growth expectations, not for losing their markets or their competitive positions. · Boston Scientific CorporationIt is one of the steadiest growers in medical devices and was sold down heavily as investors reset their growth expectations for the medtech sector., Zoetis Inc.It is the biggest maker of medicines for pets and farm animals and was sold down after cutting its sales forecast, with the question being whether the cuts stop here or continue., Intuitive Surgical, Inc.It makes the da Vinci surgical robot, and hospitals that buy one keep paying for instruments and service on every surgery done with it., Insulet CorporationIt makes the Omnipod insulin pump, the leader in tubeless pumps, and was sold down as investors reset their medtech growth assumptions.21%
- Famous brands are priced as if they will never turn around, where a modest recovery in customer demand or pricing power could move the stock significantly. · Nike, Inc.It is a brand down heavily this year and trying to fix its position against newer competitors, with early demand signals like strong resale market share showing a possible turnaround., Lululemon Athletica Inc.It is a premium brand down heavily this year as US sales slowed and cheaper rivals copied its core products, with the bet depending on customers staying willing to pay full price., Tractor Supply CompanyIt sells feed, pet food and farm supplies that rural customers buy repeatedly, and was sold down on general consumer pressure despite owning a recurring revenue base.13%
- Consulting and data businesses the market thinks AI will hollow out are priced near their worst case, with little room for an average outcome. · Accenture plcIt is the largest IT consulting firm and was sold on fear that AI cuts the need for paid consultants, though companies still hire it to build and run AI projects., CoStar Group, Inc.It owns the main commercial real estate database plus major residential property platforms, and it was sold off amid a housing slump and heavy spending on growth initiatives that have yet to generate matching revenue., Gartner, Inc.It sells research subscriptions that corporate IT and finance teams use to make buying decisions, and was sold on fear that AI chatbots replace that advice., The Trade Desk, Inc.It runs software ad buyers use to place ads across the open internet and streaming TV, facing competition from Amazon and Google but priced for a worst-case scenario.12%
- Companies tied to homes and building fell with the housing slump and recover when construction and renovation activity turns back up. · Builders FirstSource, Inc.It supplies lumber, trusses and windows to homebuilders, so it falls hardest when housing slumps and climbs fastest when new construction recovers., Pentair plcIt makes pool pumps, filters and water treatment gear, with most sales coming from repairs and replacements on existing equipment rather than new pool installs., Rollins, Inc.It owns Orkin and most revenue comes from customers who pay for pest control every month or quarter, making it a recurring revenue business tied to home ownership.12%
