The idea
I think AI-assisted design is about to do for hardware what it did for code, with a real wave of home builders making their own electronics and gadgets within two years. Rather than bet on which printer or software wins, I own the parts layer everyone needs regardless: maker chips, sensors, connectors, power components, the distributors who ship single units, and the on-demand shops that make the one custom part a home builder can't. It's concentrated in companies with real hobbyist revenue today, with a small cash slice set aside to buy dips as the trend plays out.
What it owns
- Home builders designing electronics at home reach for the microcontrollers these companies make, so a wave of new projects shows up directly in their unit sales volumes. · Microchip TechnologyThe PIC and AVR chips inside hobbyist designs are standard parts home builders reach for, so growth in small-quantity orders shows up directly in its sales., STMicroelectronicsThe STM32 line powers Arduino boards and remains the default chip that AI design tools suggest for hobby projects, so a home building wave lifts its microcontroller volumes., Texas InstrumentsTexas Instruments has the largest catalog of the standard parts every build needs and sells direct in single units, making it the default destination for small orders., Silicon LabsSilicon Labs focuses on small connected devices, the exact category a home builder makes with AI assistance, making it sensitive to swings in hobbyist demand., NXP SemiconductorsMost things people build at home want to connect to the internet or a phone, and NXP supplies the wireless and connectivity chips those projects need.32%
- Resistors, capacitors, connectors, and sensors go into every single project regardless of complexity, so total build volume flows directly to these suppliers. · AmphenolEvery device needs connectors to hold it together, and Amphenol makes more of them than anyone, so growth in total builds lifts its connector volumes., TE ConnectivityTE Connectivity makes connectors and sensors that go into every project, so growth in total home builds lifts demand for these physical parts broadly., Vishay IntertechnologyResistors and capacitors go into every circuit board by the dozen, and passive component volumes rise first when total builds increase., LittelfuseFirst-time home builders blow fuses and protection components more often than professionals do, so a wave of new builders lifts demand for these parts., Sensata TechnologiesSensors let a home-built gadget read the world through temperature, pressure, and position, and growth in projects pulls sensor demand up broadly.21%
- Every build needs to be powered and to read the real world, which runs through the power management and signal conversion chips these companies make. · Analog DevicesConverting real-world signals like motion, sound, and voltage into usable data requires analog chips with no software substitute, so hardware projects inherently drive its sales., Monolithic Power SystemsEvery gadget a home builder designs needs power management, and Monolithic Power makes the chips that do it in small, easy-to-use packages., onsemiWhen home builds move beyond blinking lights into robots and tools that move or generate heat, they need motor drivers and power switches that onsemi makes.15%
- These distributors ship components in single units and small quantities overnight, the supply layer that gets paid on every home build regardless of which chips are inside. · Arrow ElectronicsArrow ships components in single-unit quantities to home builders, making money on every build regardless of which chipmaker's parts are inside., AvnetAvnet and its Farnell arm already serve hobbyists with small-batch orders, capturing a share regardless of which chipmaker's parts are inside.12%
- When a design requires a unique part that cannot be bought off a shelf, builders order from online machine shops, the most direct play on growth in home building. · XometryBuilders upload custom designs to get the one-off parts they cannot buy off a shelf, and AI design tools will generate more of these orders., ProtolabsProtolabs manufactures one-off machined and molded parts fast, which builders order when a printed prototype is not sufficient.10%
