The Great Data Migration

The idea
I believe once big institutions move their data onto cloud platforms, it never moves back, and years of sticky contracts follow. So I built this across three layers: the platforms getting paid directly, the clouds and chips everything runs on, and the consultancies doing the actual migrations, plus a cash buffer. No single name carries the thesis, and I'm holding for years since this is a slow structural shift, not a quick catalyst. I'd rethink it if data actually started moving back off these platforms.
What it owns
- Institutions embed their data in specialized platforms through long-term contracts, creating sticky revenue that persists once data is locked in. · MicrosoftIt owns both the data platform where institutions land migrated data and the cloud infrastructure underneath, capturing revenue at two levels as adoption spreads., SnowflakeIt is where migrated enterprise data typically lands and stays, generating ongoing revenue from customers whose data never moves back out., OracleIt holds health records through acquisitions and is pushing those customers into long-term cloud contracts, mirroring institutional migration patterns., Palantir TechnologiesIt has contracts with public institutions and health systems that renew repeatedly, demonstrating that slow-moving governments pay for years once data lives on its platform., MongoDBIt is the database teams select when rebuilding applications for the cloud after migration, growing its revenue as cloud builds accelerate., DatadogEvery system migrated to the cloud needs monitoring software, and institutions buy its platform to observe their new cloud stack.34%
- Moving enterprise data to the cloud requires more compute, memory and networking hardware, which grows as cloud capacity expands. · NVIDIAIts datacenter chips power the computing layer that runs on top of migrated data once it reaches the cloud., BroadcomIt sells the networking and custom silicon that datacenters purchase as they expand to handle growing cloud demand from migrated data., Arista NetworksIt builds the networking switches inside datacenters, so more migrated data in the cloud means more of its equipment sold during buildouts., Advanced Micro DevicesIts server chips power a growing portion of cloud infrastructure where migrated data runs, gaining share as cloud capacity expands.21%
- Institutions hire specialized consultancies to physically move and rebuild their data systems, generating years of billable work per client engagement. · AccentureIt is the largest contractor institutions hire to execute the actual migration work, earning multiyear consulting fees per major client., IBMIt sits inside the legacy systems institutions are leaving, positioning it to win consulting and migration work when customers move out., InfosysIt performs outsourced migration work for large institutions, including public sector clients, earning revenue from each major data movement project., EPAM SystemsIt builds the data pipelines and platform engineering that cloud migrations require, capturing work from the technical hands-on phase of the transition., GlobantIt builds the new digital systems institutions want once their data is in the cloud, capturing the phase after migration completes.21%
- All data platforms run on major cloud infrastructure, so migration spending flows through to the cloud providers that host them. · AmazonAWS hosts the largest share of migrated data infrastructure, collecting cloud rent from institutions and the platforms they run on it., AlphabetGoogle Cloud hosts enterprise migrations and sells its own data warehouse product, capturing share as data moves from on-premise to cloud.13%
