The idea
I think AI consumer apps will consolidate over the next few years, and the winner won't be the best model but whoever owns the users and can subsidize usage the longest, the same playbook mobile internet giants ran before. So this holds the platforms with the distribution (Meta, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix, Reddit), the tollbooths that any winner must pay (Apple, Oracle, KWEB), the payment rails (Visa, Mastercard), and the transaction layer agents can't skip (Shopify, Uber, DoorDash), with a small cash buffer.
What it owns
- These companies already have billions of daily users and direct relationships that survive even if AI agents become the primary interface, giving any AI product a path to scale. · Meta PlatformsThree billion daily users and the cash reserves to subsidize free AI for years give it the same distribution advantage that shaped the mobile era., AlphabetSearch and Android are the two largest doors through which billions already reach the internet, and AI can be given away for free as long as those defaults hold., MicrosoftWindows and Office put AI in front of every office worker, a distribution channel no startup can replicate through standalone products., AmazonThe shopping relationship and Alexa ownership mean AI shopping and assistants run on infrastructure already built into the home and commerce., NetflixHundreds of millions of subscribers represent direct household relationships independent of the ad-funded layer that agents might disrupt., RedditIt holds massive user attention and the human conversation data that AI models need, creating value that platforms fighting the AI war will license.40%
- Devices, app stores and major social platforms are the rails through which AI products reach users, and whoever wins the AI war still pays to reach people through them. · AppleThe iPhone and App Store remain the tollbooth through which most consumers reach AI, and the App Store cut persists as long as distribution flows through Apple devices., OracleThe position in TikTok's US operations provides access to a distribution machine that reaches users at the scale of the platforms driving the AI economy globally., KraneShares CSI China Internet ETFThe fund holds China's largest internet companies that monetize user attention and investment in AI through dominant platform positions.30%
- An agent can book the transaction but cannot replace the physical fulfillment, so these companies own the final mile that completes every order. · ShopifyMerchants building on Shopify mean that agents shopping across the open web still route through Shopify's checkout and fulfillment., Uber TechnologiesAn agent can book the ride, but Uber owns the car and driver, the physical fulfillment no software layer can replace., DoorDashWhatever app takes the delivery order, DoorDash owns the courier network that completes the last mile.15%
- When an agent makes a purchase instead of a person, the transaction still crosses these networks, which agents cannot route around. · VisaWhen an agent makes a purchase, the payment still runs on Visa's network, a layer that cannot be routed around., MastercardMastercard collects on every purchase an agent makes regardless of which AI app wins, a toll on transactions that cannot be avoided.9%
