The idea
I believe AI shopping assistants will strip away brand loyalty and push retail toward two extremes, quality and value, hollowing out the middle. This basket leans into the value side: scale giants who win any price war, discount and off-price formats an algorithm can't undercut, private-label makers who gain when brand names stop mattering, and the marketplaces and payment rails built for algorithmic price search. It stays concentrated rather than diversified since this is a near-term thesis, and keeps 10% in cash to add on dips.
What it owns
- These chains serve the value shopper through treasure-hunt inventory and extreme discounts that an online price-comparison engine cannot undercut or replicate. · TJX CompaniesIt sells brand-name goods at prices an online comparison cannot match because its inventory is opportunistic closeouts that do not exist in an agent's searchable catalog., Ross StoresIt operates the deepest-discount off-price format with prices low enough that algorithmic comparison shopping cannot undercut them while maintaining unit economics., Dollar GeneralIt serves the most price-driven and brand-insensitive shopper, the segment that grows when value replaces discretionary spending across the consumer market., Dollar TreeIt offers fixed low-price points on small-basket items that no online agent can beat through bargaining, and converts shoppers trading down from conventional retail., Ollie's Bargain OutletIt profits directly from the shakeout of mid-market brands by buying inventory that bankrupt retailers and overstock closeouts cannot sell elsewhere., Burlington StoresIt is the faster-growing off-price chain converting closed mid-market retail shelf space into its own store expansion and sales growth., Grocery OutletIt buys surplus and closeout groceries and sells them well below regular stores through a discount model that price-comparison technology cannot replicate.30%
- These retailers win any shopping war fought primarily on price and have the scale to be the default answer when an agent searches for the lowest cost at national scope. · WalmartIt has the scale and everyday low-price reputation to be the default answer when an agent searches for the lowest national price, and is building its own marketplace to compete in algorithmic search., AmazonIt owns both the shopping assistant mediating the search and the marketplace where the lowest-cost sellers compete, so it captures value on both sides of price-driven transactions., Costco WholesaleIts entire model strips brand markup to sell quality cheaply, which is exactly what a price-and-quality algorithmic query rewards, and membership loyalty compounds the advantage., BJ's Wholesale ClubIt operates a smaller warehouse club model riding the same consumer shift as larger competitors, with members trading down from branded mid-market goods to bulk value.28%
- These platforms and payment systems are built to process transactions when an AI agent runs price comparison and routes the purchase to the cheapest option. · ShopifyIt is building the checkout infrastructure that AI agents will plug into, so it gets paid for each transaction regardless of which merchant wins the price query., PDD HoldingsIt operates a marketplace built on price-only comparison with no brand loyalty, making it the first result when algorithms rank purely by lowest cost., PayPalIt is positioned as the payment rail for agentic checkout, collecting transaction fees when algorithms complete purchases by routing to the lowest-cost seller., eBayIts structured listings were designed for price comparison before AI existed, making them easy for agents to read and rank against competitor offerings., CoupangIt dominates Korean e-commerce by competing on price and delivery speed, the two metrics an algorithm can measure and optimize for directly.22%
- These manufacturers gain share when shopping agents ignore brand names and select the cheapest product that meets the same specifications. · PerrigoIt manufactures store-brand medicines that become the obvious choice when an agent identifies the generic as chemically identical and half the price of the name brand., Post HoldingsIt owns value-branded cereals and pantry goods plus private-label operations, positioning it to win the pure price query in grocery aisles., John B. Sanfilippo & SonIt manufactures private-label nuts and snacks for major retailers, winning directly when shoppers or their agents stop paying for branded packaging.11%
