The idea
I believe live sports is the one form of entertainment that can't be binged or skipped, so the value keeps flowing to whoever owns the rights, not whoever pays to air them. This basket owns leagues, teams and marquee events directly, then adds the betting platforms, data pipes and ticketing venues that monetize that same live audience, while avoiding the distributors footing the rights bill. It spreads across many names rather than betting on one, and keeps a small cash buffer. If rights economics ever stopped flowing to owners over distributors, I'd rethink it.
What it owns
- These companies own the leagues, teams and events themselves, so every bidding war for live sports makes their asset worth more. · Liberty Media Formula OneIt owns Formula One outright, so every rights renewal is pure appointment viewing sold to the highest bidder., TKO Group HoldingsIt owns UFC and WWE outright, so every rights deal is pure appointment viewing that streamers and networks must pay more for each cycle., Churchill DownsIt owns the Kentucky Derby, a once-a-year event that only grows more valuable as media rights and in-person spending climb., Atlanta Braves HoldingsIt owns the Atlanta Braves directly, so it benefits when team valuations and live broadcast rights payments keep rising., Madison Square Garden SportsIt owns the Knicks and Rangers in the largest US media market, benefiting as live games drive higher team valuations and rights fees., Manchester UnitedIt owns Manchester United, one of the world's most-watched football clubs, benefiting as Premier League rights and commercial deals reprice higher.38%
- The in-person version of appointment viewing: venues and ticket sellers get paid because the event only happens once, live. · Live Nation EntertainmentIt promotes live shows and sells tickets through Ticketmaster, collecting a toll on in-person experiences that cannot be replayed later., Madison Square Garden EntertainmentIt owns Madison Square Garden and sister venues, collecting revenue on nearly every live event in one of the world's busiest arenas., Sphere EntertainmentIt operates the Sphere venue in Las Vegas, betting that the venue itself can be the event, something only experienced in person., StubHub HoldingsIt takes a cut every time a scarce live-event ticket changes hands, so it benefits when resale volume and prices keep climbing.20%
- Betting only works on live, unscripted outcomes, so these platforms collect a toll on every game watched in real time. · Flutter EntertainmentIt operates FanDuel, the largest US sportsbook, which only generates revenue while games are live and people are watching., DraftKingsIt collects the toll on Americans wagering on live games, growing with state-by-state betting legalization and rising spending per user., Rush Street InteractiveIt collects the betting toll in markets underserved by larger competitors, including Latin America, as international wagering grows.20%
- These firms hold official rights to the live data feeds that betting and broadcasts run on, a second layer of rights scarcity. · Sportradar GroupIt holds official data rights across major leagues worldwide, feeding sportsbooks the live feeds they must have to run betting operations., Genius SportsIt owns official NFL data rights, so every sportsbook that wants live NFL odds pays it as exclusive official data stays a must-have.14%
