GLP-1 Capacity Crunch

The idea
I believe GLP-1 demand will outrun manufacturing capacity for years, so I want to own the picks and shovels rather than the drugmakers themselves. This basket spreads across pens and glass components, bioprocessing and purification, capacity build-out, distribution, and clinical trials, deliberately skipping the two big GLP-1 makers since these suppliers win regardless of who sells the most. I hold a cash reserve to add on dips and treat this as a decade-long structural bet rather than a quick trade.
What it owns
- Every injectable dose needs a pen, a glass cartridge, and a rubber stopper, and makers of these components are sold out years ahead. · West Pharmaceutical ServicesIt makes the rubber stoppers and plungers that seal every GLP-1 cartridge and syringe, components booked out years ahead as demand outpaces supply., Stevanato GroupIt makes the glass cartridges and pre-filled syringes that GLP-1 pens are built around, one of the tightest bottlenecks in the supply crunch., Becton DickinsonIt builds the injector pens themselves at scale, capturing demand as pen production stays ahead of assembly capacity., CorningIt supplies pharmaceutical glass including vials and specialty glass that GLP-1 fill lines depend on, benefiting as capacity expands and glass stays scarce.26%
- Making and purifying peptides at scale burns through filtration gear, chemicals, and testing instruments continuously as production climbs. · DanaherIt sells the purification and bioprocessing equipment every new GLP-1 plant needs before production starts, and stays protected even if oral peptides gain share., RepligenIt sells filtration consumables that get used up with every batch, so revenue scales directly with manufacturing volume as production climbs., WatersIt makes instruments that quality-test every batch before distribution, a required step no matter which drugmaker wins, with more plants driving more testing., AvantorIt supplies the process chemicals and lab materials consumed in peptide manufacturing, a recurring revenue stream tied to rising production volume., Agilent TechnologiesIt sells analysis tools used to characterize and test peptides through development and manufacturing, gaining from injectable buildout and any shift to oral peptides.26%
- Drugmakers are spending tens of billions on new plants, and companies that design, build, and automate them capture that spending wave. · Thermo Fisher ScientificIt runs fill-finish lines where drugs go into cartridges, the capacity drugmakers are paying billions to secure and expand., ATS CorporationIt builds the automated lines that assemble injector pens, so every new GLP-1 plant announced is a potential order for new equipment., EMCOR GroupIt does mechanical and electrical work inside new pharma plants, capturing the construction phase of the capacity buildout regardless of which drug succeeds., Jacobs SolutionsIt designs and engineers pharmaceutical plants, capturing the work at the start of every capacity expansion that drugmakers announce.21%
- Every GLP-1 prescription flows through big drug distributors, who earn a cut on volumes that keep rising. · McKessonAs the largest US drug distributor, a growing share of GLP-1 prescriptions physically moves through its warehouses and it earns on rising volume., CencoraIts specialty distribution arm handles high-value drugs like GLP-1s that need careful handling and cold chain logistics as prescriptions grow., Cardinal HealthAs the third major drug distributor, it rounds out the distribution layer and grows with total GLP-1 volume without depending on any single distributor gaining share.13%
- Dozens of next-generation obesity drugs are in trials, and the companies that run those trials get paid regardless of which drug succeeds. · IQVIA HoldingsIt runs clinical trials for the next wave of obesity and metabolic drugs, getting paid as the pipeline expands and drugmakers fund new development., Medpace HoldingsIt runs trials for smaller biotechs chasing the next GLP-1, capturing the long tail of the pipeline as new entrants join the obesity gold rush.6%
