Owners of Scarce Capacity

The idea
I believe that as AI agents start doing the booking, the winners will be whoever actually controls the scarce, expiring capacity, the hotel room, the seat, the shelf, not the sites that just help people search. So this spreads across hotels, live events, cruises and resorts, airlines, and big retailers, leaning toward the strongest brands with direct-booking and loyalty power. I keep a cash slice to add when travel names sell off, and I'd rethink this if agents end up booking straight through middlemen instead of the capacity owners themselves.
What it owns
- A hotel room that sits empty tonight is lost revenue for good, and big hotel brands with loyalty programs control which rooms get booked and at what price. · Marriott InternationalOperates the largest network of hotel rooms and a major loyalty program, giving it control over inventory that any booking agent must access on its terms., Hilton Worldwide HoldingsHilton has shifted booking volume toward its own app and Honors program, strengthening its direct relationship with guests at a time when intermediaries may compete for room inventory allocation., Hyatt HotelsUpscale and resort rooms face tight supply and loyal guests, so agents need Hyatt more than Hyatt needs any single booking channel., Host Hotels & ResortsOwns the hotel buildings outright, controlling the physical rooms regardless of which brand or agent sells them, and profits when room rates stay firm., Wyndham Hotels & ResortsFranchises a large network of budget hotel rooms and uses its loyalty program to encourage direct booking instead of through comparison sites.23%
- A fixed number of seats in a venue are worthless once the show starts, so venue and event owners set the terms. · Live Nation EntertainmentControls both the venues and ticketing for a huge share of concerts through ownership and Ticketmaster., Madison Square Garden EntertainmentOwns landmark venues with a fixed number of seats on any given night and no substitute available to customers elsewhere., TKO Group HoldingsOwns UFC and WWE events that are one-night-only and sell out, making seats scarce by design and giving it full control over ticket distribution., Madison Square Garden SportsOwns the Knicks and Rangers, with home game seats at the Garden representing fixed, perishable supply that cannot be created or substituted., Sphere EntertainmentOperates a one-of-a-kind venue in Las Vegas, so its seats cannot be swapped for a competitor's venue and represent pure scarce capacity.21%
- Cabins and lift tickets are limited and expire, and these companies mostly sell directly to customers, so they capture full demand without middlemen taking a cut. · Royal Caribbean CruisesOperates cabins on fixed sailing dates with fixed capacity and sells most of them direct, especially on newer ships with strong pricing power., Viking HoldingsViking operates smaller ships for affluent repeat travelers and sells predominantly through its own channels, creating an entrenched customer relationship that limits agent influence over cabin allocation., Carnival CorporationOperates the largest cruise ship fleet, making it the biggest pool of cabin capacity for any agent to access and book., Vail ResortsOwns ski mountains where capacity is capped by the land itself, and its Epic Pass already locks in skiers before the season starts.19%
- Retailers that own inventory and shelf space decide what gets bought and charge brands for placement. · WalmartOwns the store shelves and delivery network for groceries and household goods, and sells ad space to brands seeking placement with shoppers., Costco WholesaleShelves are members-only with a limited set of items, so the company decides what's available and on what terms to outside shoppers., KrogerOwns grocery shelves across a wide region and sells ad space on them, letting brands pay for placement in front of shoppers.15%
- Airlines already push customers to book directly, and seats that book through the airline's own system leave more of the fare with the carrier. · Delta Air LinesIts seats expire at takeoff and premium cabins plus its loyalty program let it set prices rather than compete on comparison screens., United Airlines HoldingsControls a large share of seats at major hub airports, forcing booking agents to deal with it when moving passengers from those cities.12%
