The idea
I think the AI buildout has outrun itself, and sometime in the next two years the spending behind Nvidia and the picks-and-shovels trade starts to contract. The recent talk of deliberately pacing AI progress feels like an early signal that the urgency behind all this compute spending may cool. So instead of betting against those names, I own what should catch the money as it rotates out: equal-weight and value funds, cash-rich defensives, old-economy sectors left behind, and a slice of software firms that buy AI rather than sell it.
What it owns
- When capital leaves concentrated mega-cap AI stocks, it typically flows into broad-based value and equal-weight holdings where no single company dominates. · Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETFAn equal-weight index fund that benefits when the gap between largest and average companies narrows, capturing gains if AI spending moderates and smaller stocks outpace megacaps., Vanguard Value ETFThe fund concentrates in cheap large-cap stocks that outperform when growth multiples compress and value becomes favorable again., Health Care Select Sector SPDRHealth care traded inexpensively relative to earnings stability while attention favored AI, leaving room for multiple expansion if capital rotates to defensive sectors., Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDRConsumer staples earnings remain stable across economic cycles, attracting capital when investors abandon higher-volatility technology spending bets.23%
- Steady cash generators with no dependence on AI spending cycles tend to hold up best when speculative rotations unwind. · Berkshire HathawayThe company holds enormous cash and operates steady businesses insulated from AI spending cycles, positioned to redeploy capital when dislocations emerge., Johnson & JohnsonThe company generates reliable pharmaceutical cash flow independent of technology cycles, making it a stable destination for capital fleeing growth-dependent sectors., Procter & GambleThe company sells everyday products with consistent cash generation regardless of data center buildout cycles, serving as ballast during growth slowdowns., AbbViePharmaceutical cash flows remain stable and predictable while capital seeks refuge from speculative technology investments during downturns., Coca-ColaThe company sells identical products in any economy with zero exposure to technology spending, becoming a traditional safe haven if growth concerns intensify.21%
- Companies that buy AI capability as a cost input rather than sell infrastructure benefit when excess compute capacity collapses prices. · AdobeThe company buys AI compute as input costs while maintaining software pricing power, so oversupply of chips directly improves margins., SalesforceThe company embeds AI into products it sells without building infrastructure, so declining compute costs improve software margins directly., IntuitThe company powers products with AI while avoiding chip manufacturing, meaning excess compute supply flows straight to profitability as cost savings., SAPThe company deploys AI as an operating cost while retaining enterprise software revenue, allowing margin expansion as compute becomes abundant and cheap., Uber TechnologiesThe company relies on machine learning for operations but sells transportation and delivery services, benefiting when algorithm costs fall while ride demand persists.18%
- Banks, energy, and insurance companies traded cheaply while capital concentrated in AI, positioning them to gain most from attention rotating back. · JPMorgan ChaseThe bank trades at depressed valuations despite dominant market position and steady earnings, standing to benefit if financials regain investor focus., Exxon MobilEnergy companies return massive cash to shareholders and were starved of capital allocation while money chased AI, positioning them for inflows during rotation., ChubbInsurance underwriting generates steady profits independent of the AI cycle, and low valuations reflect years of neglect favoring growth over stability., MetLifeThe company produces reliable insurance earnings at cheap valuations after extended period of capital focusing elsewhere, poised for revaluation during rotation.15%
- Long-dated bonds and gold typically rise when growth concerns spread across markets and risk appetite fades. · iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETFLong-term treasury bonds rally when growth concerns push rates lower, providing downside protection if AI spending contraction spreads to the broader economy., SPDR Gold SharesGold serves as portfolio insurance, rising when growth fears escalate or market-wide risk aversion takes hold.11%
