The idea
I believe the real winners of the AI buildout are the companies that own the physical chokepoints behind it, not the chipmakers or model builders getting the headlines. So this owns chip packaging and testing, grid and nuclear equipment, copper and non-China rare earths, plus smaller legs in water, fertiliser and defence materials, all picked for scarcity the market hasn't priced in yet, which meant skipping names that already ran hard.
What it owns
- Every advanced AI chip must be packaged, inspected and tested before it works, and the companies providing these services are the chokepoint, not the chip designers. · CamtekIt makes the inspection tools that check advanced packages and stacked memory for defects, a step that becomes more critical as AI chips grow more complex., Amkor TechnologyIt owns outsourced advanced-packaging capacity, the step every AI chip must pass through after fabrication and the one that keeps running short of demand., EntegrisIt owns chokepoints in filters and handling materials every fabrication plant needs, where qualification lock-in keeps rivals out of the business., Kulicke & Soffa IndustriesIt makes the bonders that physically connect chips inside packages, the machines the advanced-packaging buildout cannot skip or easily replace., CohuIt makes the handlers and contactors that move and touch every chip during testing, a step that grows with chip volume regardless of who wins the AI race., Ultra Clean HoldingsIt builds the gas-delivery and fluid subsystems inside the big fabrication tools, the quiet supplier below the headline equipment makers that the industry depends on.26%
- Data centers need far more electricity than the current grid can deliver, making turbine castings, grid equipment and nuclear fuel the binding constraints on buildout speed. · EatonIt makes the power distribution gear every AI data center needs between the grid and the racks, where order backlogs stretch out because electricity, not chips, is the binding constraint., HubbellIt sells the unglamorous grid hardware, connectors and utility components that the grid buildout for AI load consumes in growing volume., Powell IndustriesIt builds custom switchgear, the engineered electrical rooms data centers and industrial plants wait in line for months to receive., Howmet AerospaceIt owns the blade castings, the actual bottleneck inside gas turbines rather than the turbine assembler, and almost nobody else can qualify its superalloy capacity., CamecoIt owns tier-one uranium mines in the West at a time when nuclear power is the only firm, carbon-free answer to AI electricity demand., GE VernovaIt owns gas turbine and grid equipment capacity that AI data centers are queuing up for, held at reduced weight because some of the shortage is already reflected in the price., Centrus EnergyIt is the only US-owned uranium enricher and the sole licensed producer of HALEU fuel that next-generation reactors require, held at reduced weight due to near-term Russian supply dependency.24%
- Copper and non-China rare earths are the raw inputs the energy and chip buildout cannot work without, and new supply takes a decade to develop. · Freeport-McMoRanIt owns copper production at a scale that takes a decade to replicate, and every data center, transformer and grid mile this take tracks requires copper., MP MaterialsIt owns the only scaled rare-earth mine and processing chain in the US, the non-China option the materials buildout depends on., Teck ResourcesIt owns one of the few large copper growth pipelines in friendly jurisdictions, the supply side of the same copper squeeze the take requires.15%
- The suppliers of energetics, specialty alloys and carbon fibre below the prime contractors are the layer rearmament cannot route around or quickly replace. · HexcelIt owns qualified aerospace-grade carbon fibre capacity, the material that defence programs cannot substitute and rearmament requires in growing volume., Carpenter TechnologyIt makes the specialty alloys that aerospace and defence programs cannot substitute, one of the small suppliers below the big contractors., NewMarket CorporationIts AMPAC subsidiary is the only US producer of ammonium perchlorate, the oxidiser every solid rocket motor needs, a single-source chokepoint.11%
- Food production depends on cheap nitrogen fertiliser and sulphur for phosphate processing, both now scarce inputs rather than abundant ones. · CF IndustriesIt makes nitrogen fertiliser on cheap US natural gas, the cost advantage the food leg depends on, because nitrogen is really stored energy., MosaicIt owns integrated phosphate production that benefits as sulphur tightens, the real squeeze in fertiliser production after potash supply normalized.9%
- Data center cooling and semiconductor fabrication both require enormous volumes of clean water, making permitted desalination plants and their core technology scarce assets. · Energy RecoveryIt owns the pressure-exchanger technology that makes large desalination plants economic, a near-monopoly position in the water chain behind AI cooling., Consolidated WaterIt owns and operates permitted desalination plants, the scarce asset of the permit and the facility, not just the equipment.8%
