The Screenless Shift

The idea
I believe people will gradually move away from screens and toward talking to AI the way they'd chat with a friend, while cooking, walking or shopping. This basket owns that shift across four layers: the voice AI doing the talking, the wearables people carry it in, the chips powering those wearables, and the audio layer for listening. Since nobody knows which device shape wins, the chip and wearable slots stay diversified, with a bigger bet on SoundHound as the riskiest piece, some cash held back, and a multi-year horizon since this is a slow, decade-long shift rather than a quick call.
What it owns
- These companies build the AI that responds when people talk, forming the brain of any screenless device. · AlphabetGemini is already a top voice assistant on phones, speakers and earbuds, so it benefits as talking replaces tapping across devices., SoundHound AIIt is the only pure-play conversational AI company in this take and was named a leader for voice AI platforms, though it carries higher risk., AmazonAlexa was designed to get information by voice while hands are busy, and Audible covers audio content for this screenless shift., MicrosoftIts stake in OpenAI and Copilot integration provide public exposure to the voice AI leader now that OpenAI remains private.32%
- Every AI companion needs tiny, low-power chips, microphones and audio components to function in any form factor. · QualcommIt makes chips for whatever wearable device wins in this shift, and its newest designs target AI-powered glasses, watches and companions., Arm HoldingsNearly every wearable chip design relies on its architecture, so it benefits regardless of which device shape ultimately wins., Ambiq MicroIt designs ultra-low-power chips for AI in battery-powered earbuds and wearables, solving the core hardware constraint., Cirrus LogicIt makes the audio chips that let earbuds and wearables hear and speak clearly, critical for voice-first devices., SynapticsIt makes chips that run AI and audio directly on the device, enabling fast responses without relying on a phone., KnowlesEvery voice-controlled device needs a tiny microphone, and it is a top maker of them for earbuds and wearables.26%
- These companies make the devices people wear or keep nearby to talk to AI without looking at a screen. · Meta PlatformsIts AI glasses exemplify a wearable device built for talking while moving through the world, with an AI assistant at the core., AppleAirPods are the most common way people interact with Siri without pulling out a phone, positioning them as a screenless interface., GarminIt makes wearables people keep on all day, positioning it as a natural maker of a voice-controlled AI companion., SonosIt builds speakers and headphones controlled by voice, capturing the listening layer from a hardware perspective.23%
