The idea
I believe AI power demand is outrunning the grid's physical capacity, and the real bottleneck is hardware: transformers, switchgear, high-voltage lines, and the crews building it all. My portfolio is a barbell, weighted toward equipment makers and grid contractors riding the acute multi-year supply crunch, balanced by utilities, scarce power generators, and copper producers compounding through the longer buildout. I hold some cash to add on the sharp pullbacks this kind of concentrated, high-beta theme tends to produce, and I'd rethink this if the data-center buildout itself slows.
What it owns
- These companies make the electrical hardware the grid is critically short of, with lead times stretching years, so they can raise prices and still sell out. · GE VernovaIts electrification segment sells the large transformers and high-voltage equipment in shortest supply, while its gas turbines are sold out for years to power-hungry data centers., Eaton CorporationIt is the dominant maker of switchgear, breakers, and power distribution gear on both the grid and data center side, with a multi-year backlog., Hubbell IncorporatedIt sells the connectors, enclosures, and distribution components utilities buy in volume every time they upgrade the grid., Powell IndustriesIt is a small-cap maker of custom switchgear and substation packages with surging data center orders and high exposure to the equipment shortage.29%
- Contractors and distributors get paid on every grid buildout project regardless of whose equipment wins, so they profit from the physical construction phase. · Quanta ServicesIt is the largest builder of transmission lines and substations in America with a record backlog, and skilled labor scarcity makes workforce ownership critical., Wesco InternationalIt distributes electrical equipment and wire to utilities and data center contractors, acting as a toll booth on buildout volume regardless of which manufacturer wins., MYR GroupIt is a specialist electrical contractor focused on transmission, distribution, and commercial data center work.17%
- Power still has to be conditioned, backed up, and cooled inside data centers, making this the last mile of the same bottleneck affecting the broader grid. · Vertiv HoldingsIt is the leading supplier of power management and cooling inside data centers, so every megawatt from the grid still passes through its equipment before reaching chips., nVent ElectricIt makes the enclosures, liquid-cooling gear, and electrical protection hardware for data centers and industrial electrification., Comfort Systems USAIt is a mechanical and electrical contractor with heavy data center construction exposure and a swelling backlog for inside-the-fence buildout work.14%
- When power is scarce, whoever already owns generation sells it at premium prices to desperate data center buyers. · Vistra CorpIt is a merchant generator in Texas's tightest power markets with nuclear and gas capacity data centers want to contract, so earnings tie directly to scarcity pricing., Constellation EnergyIt owns the largest US nuclear fleet, providing clean always-on power that hyperscalers are signing long-term premium contracts for during periods of scarcity.12%
- Every transformer, cable, and substation is made of copper, so the raw-material layer of the entire buildout benefits from the demand surge. · Freeport-McMoRanIt is one of the world's largest copper producers, and grid buildout plus data centers add structural demand against supply that takes a decade to bring online., Southern CopperIt is among the lowest-cost copper miners with the industry's largest reserves, offering a durable dividend-paying way to own the raw material of electrification.10%
- Regulated utilities and broad grid exposure compound steadily over the decade-long buildout, smoothing the ride if near-term shortage names wobble. · First Trust Smart Grid Infrastructure ETFIt is a broad basket of global grid-modernization companies that catches buildout names this take does not hold individually., Dominion EnergyIt is a regulated utility serving Northern Virginia, the world's densest data center corridor, with a massive transmission capex plan regulators allow it to earn on.10%
